North East Tennessee Bamboo BBQ

I hope some of you are close enough to attend this event. Sounds like it is going to be nice. One hour from Asheville, NC and 1 hour 45 minutes from Knoxville, TN. http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz350/blacksmith13/Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%20Mar%2023%2015%20%203.58.28%20PM_zpsp59bkiht.png ...

Thanks for the ideas guys. Repeatedly cutting them just isn't working.

Sasaella masamuneana 'Albostriata' and Redbud

I'm looking for ideas to permanently remove the redbuds from this patch of what I believe to be Sasaella masamuneana 'Albostriata' Started several years ago from a 1 gallon pot divided 4 ways, they are now growing together and looking pretty good, on a rough, steep, rocky and ugly bank. Every year I...

I have what is believed to be viridiglaucescens if you want to compare. This thread might be helpful http://www.bambooweb.info/bb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5588&start=15 Or it might cause you to give up. Link there to around 60 photos of a mature grove in Asheville. My still immature patch took 50...

Re: Thought it was Vivax, but maybe not...

Just looked, mine do not have the little whiskers. According to Compton, on Vivax shoots " The blade is narrowly triangular to ribbon shaped, reflexed, and strongly crinkled, auricles and oral setae are lacking ," It is re-leafing from winter damage, at the base of each new leaf hairs are ...

oobmab,
I'm no help with the ID, but yeah, sometime when you are going to be in the area a sample starting would be cool. Is it shooting now?

Re: Recomend good saws all/blades

This guy was at my place salvaging some of my killed nigra culms a coupe of weeks ago. His system worked real neat. Solves the problem of sharp branch stubs and tearing out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ASDfcP56II He said the small saw works great for cutting culms as well. I haven't tried it ye...

Horizontal bandsaw? I would try it on mine and let you know how it works but I have no 4 inch bamboo.

Re: To clear cut or not ?

Thanks for all the interest. Decided to cut most of it but leave a few just in case. Here is where I'm at with it now. I couldn't really tell when cutting the culms if they were dead or not. There seemed to be very little moisture. http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz350/blacksmith13/NigraCut_zps2c...

Re: Best Cold-hardy Dwarf Bamboo?

Yeah, But never stopped to look close. At 70 mph I thought it is YG. Just big, because it is growing in Nolichucky River bottom land. Do you believe it's some other species? YG here is only burned bad on the outside of the patch and very tops. Other wise it has retained about 80% green. I doubt Erwi...

Re: Best Cold-hardy Dwarf Bamboo?

There are 4 patches of river cane within 2 miles of my house. It looks pretty tattered even in mild winters and most of the year here. Consider Indocalamus tessellatus. IT has done about as well as any I have this winter and I'm going to be moving most of it. IT shoots early, so give me a call if yo...

Re: To clear cut or not ?

This patch was started from a single plant in the summer of 09. No, this isn't typical. During the milder winters we have been having it stays green all year. I think it did top kill about the second year. But it recovered nicely. Yeah, I'm thinking about the same things. Plus once shooting starts i...

To clear cut or not ?

I haven't seen this kind of damage before. So the question is, is there any chance of re-leafing? Or should I just cut it all to the ground before shooting season.
