Re: +90% likely to be moving from 7A to 5B - advise apprecia

Well, I'm fairly certain all my Colorado planted bamboo is dead. :( Part of me expects possible shoots come May, but most of me expects that the sub -20°F events over the course of the winter here to have killed it all. Only one of my previous bamboos to be rated down to -20 was Nuda, and I didn't b...

Re: trailering bamboo advice

Use a horse trailer. They are open enough yet provide protection from wind. I moved my boos here from southern Oregon in my ex's horse trailer and it worked great. Exactly. I was scouring craigslist for horsetrailers and almost fell for a scam, but google Emma Kent and Horse Trailer and you'll see ...

Re: trailering bamboo advice

If you use a closed trailer, you would need to leave door cracked open some of the time or plants will bake. They can stand to be tied up and covered on side for several days. Start with a good watering. I would not wrap them tight in plastic, as you do not want greenhouse effect. Maybe tarp down w...

Rhizomes are critical when plants are in shock, because that's all they have to fall back on. So, try to preserve as much of that as you can when you dig out your bamboos.
Already potted for several months and doing fine minus the raccoon harassment.

trailering bamboo advice

So as vaguely mentioned in other threads, I'm moving from VA to CO. Moving company will take 95% of everything for me, but I'll be moving a dozen or so potted boos in a uhaul trailer. Advice I want is whether to use a utility trailer or a cargo trailer. I know wrapping the plants in plastic, laying ...

Re: How to keep potted specimens in-raccooned?

Red pepper has helped, but not entirely stopped the curious critter. I sprinkled some coyote urine powder (supposed to be anti-deer) too. These were potted in some generic equivalent to miracle-grow with pine bark mulch on top. I have a ponytail palm on the front porch that has repeatedly been a tar...

How to keep potted specimens un-raccooned?

Every single one of my potted boos have been dug into, some completely uprooted from the pot and laying next to it. Other potted plants have been treated likewise. I'm guessing its a raccoon, but don't hack a smoking gun yet. Is there a sure fire trick to keep these babies un-molested? I'm über-aggr...

Response from the Denver Zoo: None of our bamboo will reach the height and width that you have experienced in Virginia. If you take a third off the description of height for most bamboo species, you will have a more accurate number of what to expect. The diameter of the culms are generally in the ½ ...

Re: Neat p. a. Spectabilis shoot

It would be neat if you could take a DNA sample from bamboo for ID sake. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/31/be7avy7e.jpg Pic from this morning. The mother plant has the close internodes like my Koi does, but not nearly as compressed. And now, comparing, the new Koi shoots look very similar: http://i...

Re: Neat p. a. Spectabilis shoot

It's spectabilis to my knowledge, mother plant is to the right in that pic sold to me as phy aureosulcata spectabilis. Yellow culm, green groove.

I'll take a fresh pic tomorrow.

Mine haven't zagged back yet. I'd love to capture a time lapse video of that happening.
