Re: Rufa sized up big time. Nitida... not so much.

A short update.... my nitida is shooting and looks like it will for a while. Very happy about that. On another note, some of my smaller Rufa are shooting as well. Not sure what to make of that...

Rufa sized up big time. Nitida... not so much.

My 5 year Rufa really sized up this spring. I'm really happy about that as they were really scrawny for so long. But my Nitida... the largest plant threw a few shoots and that's about it. Am I too early? I think I remember Nitida shooting well after Rufa, but not this long.

Thoughts??

Re: How brown can something get....

Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna give it time... truth be told, all my bamboo looks rough right now. My Nitida looks horrible. My Rufa got pounded by snow.

Re: How brown can something get....

Thanks for the reply. This particular variety amuses me.... I thought I had lost it to wind burn and heat last year (we had a very hot & dry summer). Then in the middle of the summer, it threw shoots!! Now its all brown. It was mulched pretty heavy, so I hope it comes back.

Re: Too early to split/transplant?

Update: My rufa haven't thrown shoots yet, so I'm gonna start moving/splitting plants this week.... provided the rain stops long enough to do it!

How brown can something get....

.... and still make a comeback? Last spring I planted three Indocalamus tessellatus. They are completely brown now. Shooting for us is right around the corner and I am wondering if these will come back. Our winter was pretty mild this year, so its not that the cold could've done them in. Thoughts on...

Re: Too early to split/transplant?

I'm tempted to move some plants next week. Daytime temps all but 50*F. Overnight temps just below freezing.

Too early to split/transplant?

We are having a mild winter here in Pennsylvania, so far. I have some Rufa I need to move and split. If this weather trend keeps up, I was thinking perhaps mid-February. Too early? Is there a certain weather trend I should look for before moving plants?

Re: Bamboo Rehab?

All my plants came from a commercial nursery in Oregon. I didn't realize how lousy the soil was in this bed until this past spring... I think I'm gonna transplant early this year and hope for the best. Plan to install some type of irrigation, exactly how is still up in the air. Thanks for the replies.

Bamboo Rehab?

I need some feedback, guys. My Rufa will be in the ground 5 years this coming spring. They were started from a few plants in 1-gallon pots. They shoot every spring, but they will not get any taller than 2'. The bed they are in is pretty lousy and I am thinking I may move them to a well fertilized ga...

Re: Your fall 'Boo prep routine?

The only potential harm is that some critters might find this a nice place to overwinter and/or feed on shoots or rhizomes. I think it's a small chance but still wanted to mention it. Point well taken. I've had more issues with rats than anything. Hence the reason a keep a .38 snub in my back pocke...

Re: Over-wintering bamboo/ other plants

One of our "lasagna" garden beds. There's actually a few small Rufa buried in there! That 20" high pile of leaves and straw will be condensed to about 6" come spring.

Your fall 'Boo prep routine?

I am curious what fall routine (if any) you use to winterize your plants and/or prepare for spring growth? I did something yesterday I never did in the 4+ years I have been growing Fargesia varies: I actually fertilized and mulched everything in the Fall! My Rufa plants haven't sized up a whole lot ...

Hottest week of the year - and my 'boo is shooting?!

I'm a bit shocked. I had three plants of Indocalamus tessellatus that I planted this spring (1-gallon sized). I almost lost the one, see my previous two threads. I've been watering as much as I can. Looked yesterday, all three plants are shooting! We are on the second week of 90+ degree temps. Unrea...

Indocalamus tessellatus... its alive!

In my previous thread, I mentioned I was on the verge of loosing my 'boo to the heat. Thanks to the mulch and daily water, she greened back up again! Even with the heat the past few weeks I was able to keep things looking good.
