Re: expected remaining lifetime?
I was told that many of my bamboos were originally sourced from Avery Island - and yes, I have thought along these lines. these clones would have to be ancient in bamboo time. they don't seem to be weakening- but my Phyllo. elegans has gone downhill three years in a row, though I am not positive as ...

Re: Heavy poor draining clay
I am trying out some Phyllo. heteroclada in a wet zone- one year on it's surviving, but sticking to it's mound. ten years ago I placed some Phyllo. nidularia farcta in a swampy area. it has run a hundred feet in all directions and getting bigger all the time. almost scary, if you didn't love bamboo....

Re: Pruning after Oldhamii dieback
oldhamii started leafing out about 28 feet up yesterday. I was amazed as this is way too early. the top 8 feet of a 40 foot culm appears to be browning - and will probably fall off eventually. bambusa textilis kanapaha began vigorously releafing all over last week. apparently completely undamaged by...

Re: Pruning after Oldhamii dieback
leave them alone! they will often leaf out. the tops of the culms might be killed- but they will fall off on their own. I have a similar situation here at present. lows of 21 degrees for two consecutive nights. 40 foot tall culms still green, though all leaves were lost. they've been through worse. ...

Re: Bamboo Seedlings - Arundinaria gigantea
I can't answer your question- but that's great that you got seeds and got them to work. I have collected specimens of the species from several states and various locations in Louisiana. a great plant- and extremely variable. I have not figured out how to grow them without a lot of bacteria related l...

Re: Bambusa oldhamii in colder areas?
due to a mild winter - I have several near fullsize culms - in zone 8. very exciting to see! but not dependable- and will likely fry in January- if history is prologue. there are four nearly four inch diameter culms at present- one is towering over a nearby 35 foot tall loblolly pine. I moved these ...

Re: Clumping bamboo culm propagation advice please
while digging out a large "grove" of Bambusa multiplex, 13 years ago, there were hundreds of cutoff culms which I simply laid on the ground and covered. yes, many sprouted, and this planting then outgrew all of the properly dug out sections (heavy equipment) and is the most vigorous of all...

Re: Arundinaria gigantea on ebay
the seller responded positively to my unfavorable criticism of her product delivered versus photo at the ebay site and today i received a large parcel of 12" long 8+ internode pieces of Arundinaria gigantea. at no addditional charge. i am amazed!! i planted them within the hour- the successful ...

Re: Arundinaria gigantea on ebay
yeah- i could not figure out the chopping up into little pieces part- and yes, the pieces were washed clean of any soil (red clay evidently by the color.) i had failed w/ this ubiquitous species in the past- w/ small rhizome sections- and continued to be amazed by the seller's insistance that she ha...

Arundinaria gigantea on ebay

Re: Too much sun?
my variegated Hibanobambusa does fine in full sun- until it gets too dry, and then it will show a lot of burning at its leaf tips.i planted it in an area that in ten years will be shaded by tall trees ("live" and nuttal oaks and spruce pine) but it has sized up nicely in five or six years ...

Re: Bambusa multiplex "silverstripe" question
by late august the "silverstripe" has lost most of the color that it was exhibiting when the culms were emerging. in fact, the white stripes on the culms seemed to have faded out significantly. still rocketing skyward however.
