Re: Gigantochloa at Mercer
I'm sorry to hear about the topkill... That was a beautiful specimen... convinced me to buy my field grown plant from Bamboo Plantation a few years ago. My plant didn't have any real protection... Only thing we knew to try was wrapping it in sheets, but I knew that wouldn't really help. The culms ha...

Gigantochloa at Mercer
Long time no post. With our freezing winter past, I lost my lovely Gigantochloa Atroviolacea boo. three "snows" and several days where we never got above the mid 20's. :-( I haven't been able to get by Mercer Arboretum to see how their big Gigantochloa faired... did it survive the winter? ...

RE: armed and dangerous
If I had gotten the D40 before my stroke like I had wanted I would have saved even more money and gotten manual lenses but then I'd be screwed with needing to buy AF lenses to replace the manual lenses I ma have to invest in a light tripod if I can find one convenient enough to use along with my wal...

RE: armed and dangerous
unfortunately that's how SLRs are.. the cameras aren't too bad but the lenses add upyou can save a bit if you don't need AF or VR lenses unfortunately, I have to have AF lenses due to not being able to hold the camera with one hand and manual focus with the other.Ritz Camera had a two lens kit with ...

RE: armed and dangerous
So far, I love it. It's heavier than a point-andshoot and therefore a bitcumbersome for me with only one hand to work with ( my left side was affected by my stroke and I hae not yet regained the use of my hand/arm . The Nikon D40 is about the lightwest of the DSLRs, and the best value out there. I'v...

Well, 8 months after a hemorrhagic stroke and fighting brain cancer I finally got a DSLR and a flickr account.. I finally have some decent pics of my plants though they're a bit covered in pine needles right now. My back yard is till a mess, not being able to get out there and work on it mysef like ...

anyone know Ginkgo?
does anyone have any experience with ginkgo tres? I had a small plant years ago when I was into bonsai, but it never did much.. I'm guessing it didn't like Texas limate. but, I've always liked it and back in July, before my s=hemhorragic stroke and subsequent hospitalisation for chemo and rehab, My ...

RE: Cold Damage So Far
My G. Atroviolacea isn't too happy now. Lost most of it's leaves. Hopefully it's alright though. The Textilis and Malingensis (?) both look just fine. Haven't been around to the side of the house yet to see how the potted plants are doing. I moved them in the day before and moved them out a day or s...

RE: Identifying Aborted Shoots
I guess my Textillis was just taking a breather. Was gone for a couple days and checked my boo this afternoon and the culms I thought were aborted are taller and there's some new shoots coming out of the ground. Man this plant has done amazing this year. As has my questionable Malingensis. I gave up...

Identifying Aborted Shoots
My Textilis aborted on a few shoots for sure, one at about 6 feet and one about 3 or 4 feet, and two were just breaking the soil line. But there's a couple culms that were already up to their full height. The ends are leafy, but the sheaths haven't started shedding and the culms aren't branching. Th...

Hmmm... Maybe mine isn't Malingensis. I believe I got it from Tropical Bamboo on eBay last Spring.boonut wrote:Mine don't zig zag.
Maybe this weekend I can try to get a couple pics of it.

RE: Beauty time for Bambusa malingensis
Around what size diameter does Malingensis stop zig-zagging?
Mine looks crazy with all the zigs and really spidery branch clusters. And last year's shorter culms are making it hard to mow around.

RE: Well that happened quickly... Humberto
I'm kind of glad Humberto passed us. My front yard has been a mush pit most of the summer. If the predictions are correct, we'll finally have a week without rain. Maybe the ground will dry out and my Chinese Fringe won't total die. But then that means that I'll actually have to water the plants in t...

RE: ABS members on Bambooweb.info forum
Very good. I was just figuring I'd get some kind of acknowledgment besides my Paypal receipt.
And other journals I belong to often don't get a month's issue out til near the end of the month, so I never know when to expect issues.
