Re: Best single source book/web/app on when & how to plant s

UPDATE: So far the best sites I've found are below. I really hope there is a book or app I'm missing, because they are all kind of basic and none answer all my questions, although major kudos to their owners: * Rob's Plants seed germination: http://www.robsplants.com/seed/germination.php * Tim Cloth...

Best single source book/web/app on when & how to plant seeds

I'm looking for a recommendation from an experienced gardener on the best single source - book or web or even app, I don't care - for when and how to plant seeds. Ideally each plant would have an identical, chart-like, well-laid-out page that would make it easy to determine for each Zone (or only Zo...

Re: Tiny atro 'boo 2 years later & Training Bamboo...

So today the temp got up to a balmy 34F before going down to 31F with very light snow currently (6pm). Not only do most of the leaves on the incense bamboo - the exact same ones that look totally fried in the above pics, taken around 48 hours ago - now look perfectly fine, but I spotted several mayb...

Re: The OHGpC - One Heated Greenhouse per Culm - project...

Thanks for all the feedback, keep it coming! :-) New worry: Would any amount of heat (not light) on the culms (not roots) prevent dormancy? Or another way of putting this: Can I use a component that'd possibly keep at least part of the culm at 110F, or do I need to aim for more like 10F? Q: How will...

The OHGpC - One Heated Greenhouse per Culm - project...

For the ultimate in Zone 6 winter culm luxury... I was already planning on trying individual culm greenhouses next year, so the logical next step... heated individual posh culm greenhouses. Any suggestions on what temperature range to aim for, and ideas if periodic rapid change in temp would be bad?...

Re: Tiny atro 'boo 2 years later & Training Bamboo...

Thanks for the encouragement and advice :-) In the Spring I'm going to try using the 8' variety of the clear plastic tubes that I have pictured in above posts for a different purpose - to see if they can keep maybe half of the new culms' leaves alive over next winter, to increase upsize girth for Sp...

Re: Tips for this weeks FREEZE

Temp got down to 20F and the pots still look dried out. My damage is done, so I'm going to water the foliage again to remove ice and shut off asap to give time to dry before temps drop again. Only water when above 40 degrees Fahrenheit at mid-day. It is really hard finding authoritative info on thi...

... and as long as this post is going to be pushed to the top anyway, I might as well post some pics of the current sadness... this is by far the coldest / earliest winter in Boston of this atro's life... I'm really glad it didn't happen when it was a baby. Based on what I've read elsewhere - "...

Re: Tiny atro 'boo 2 years later & Training Bamboo...

Noticed my original post now has some broken image links; so uploading the images here and then fixing links. I hate broken links, plus they are cool pics of the most-trained bamboo I've ever seen... Oh and an update on my training: Results no where near as dramatic, but I did manage to get some cul...

Re: Tiny atro 'boo 2 years later & Training Bamboo...

I took off one of the clear containers completely yesterday, and also the top halves of all 3 of the black tubes. My understanding is that bamboo needs sunlight exposure to harden. Is that correct? The shoots/leaves that were in the black tubes have a sort of albino appearance at the moment. I'm pla...

No sadly there didn't seem to be any in that early state when I went to take photos yesterday. Next year hopefully!

Wonder what kind that is? If you get a picture of any new shoots coming up, someone might be able to ID it. Here you (all) go, ID away :-) A bunch of high-res photos, probably the ones towards the end will be the most useful: https://flic.kr/s/aHskVDVhGd A few closeup details: 1000 closeup IMG_2017...

Re: Yet another bamboo installation

Strange, I've never hit a limit, I wonder if it is my site status settings Steve though sure seems to have no limits either. I also hit this limit all the time - it's for uploaded attached images, not images inserted via the [img] tag. There is also a 1000 x 1000 pixel max resolution and a max imag...

Re: If you stake 'em you might break 'em

Regular line works too, but the webbing is flat and easier on the culms. It is the same as heavy duty (3/4 to 1 inch wide) electricians pull tape, if you have that around, but the arborist stuff is green. I'm using Green Plastic Garden Tape for now, as Nylon Webbing would be so heavy for the thin n...
