Incredibly find and sweet view. We'll be neighbors when my youngest graduates from college in two years.

Re: Bare rhizome results to date

Just a quick four year update from the Yellow Groove rhizomes that have survived some epic winters of -25F and sustained 50mph winter winds. I've had complete leaf kill two winters, and some top kill. But the YG roars back. I've been trenching in a U shape to keep it contained. I put these in after ...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

Is that an upsize after the damage or are the previous culms similar size? Edit-just noticed you said 100+ culms so certainly that isn't an upsize as a whole, but still, after -30f...I'd be thrilled as that's even colder than I should get here. Just to add our actual high and low temps from 12/31/1...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

@Up: my boo is in three areas around my property, and each grove is a different age. The oldest, maybe seven years old, upsized substantially/normally. That's the shoot photographed (grove is approx. 12ft tall.) Three-year-old's are a mix of smaller and bigger culms, so it's early for me to judge. T...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

The last couple days have been such a relief as my yellow groove displays its amazing resilience. Here in Northeast Pennsylvania we had a full week of windchill temps reaching -30F. One hundred percent of my 100+ culms were completely defoliated and I assumed totally top-killed. They looked wretched...

Re: Looking for 12'-15' tall clumping Bamboo in zone 6 with

I'm old Zone 5b/new Zone 6, and we tried a variety of Fargesia (nitida and one of the Jiuzhaigou) only to have top kill and/or stunted growth. My goal was a 15' screen. It was pretty crushing to see so much work go down the drain when cold, dry winds ravaged my girls. On the other hand, I've had ama...

Great pics! Hope you stop back in a couple years for an update. Great to see P aureosulcata planted rather than destroyed. Beautiful!

Re: Replanting Bamboo

Just to add to what Eric said ... you have a runner sending out underground rhizomes. What you see are the shoots that are called culms. Most of the living energy is in the underground rhizomes. To transplant, you need a substantial section of the underground rhizome, harvested while it's still pack...

Re: QUESTIONS ABOUT MY BAMBOO SEEDS

I always get rid of chlorine before sprouting any kind of seeds, or before topping off my fish and turtle tanks. Simply fill gallon jugs and leave the tops off. It helps to put them in a sunny window, but it's not necessary. As Tarzanus says, chlorine readily evaporates. A gallon jug will be "c...

Re: Will plowing prevent bamboo from entering a farmers fiel

Having the farmer do your rhizome pruning is a little sketchy per the ethics of responsible bamboo ownership. But Pennsylvania needs more bamboo, so I say F it and plant away.

Re: Gardening zone question...

A truer climate zone map would more closely resemble the typical topo map in many areas, given the fact that 1000' elevation is usually a 3F degree change. There's a 5F degree change on my daily jogging route. I probably posted earlier that I used a local online reporting weather station's historica...

Re: Boo-Shoots 2016

Thirty-one days of continuous shooting, then two days of nothing. It was really cool to find a skinny new baby this afternoon in a bed that's shadier than my others. Possibly arundinaria gigantea (river cane). This is a spot I buried six bare rhizomes that were basically 'throw-aways'. Poor culm bud...
