Re: Pruning to make bushier
I know these can look bushy because I have another grove on the other side of the property I planted one year later than the one in question and just this shooting season it filled in solid, leaves right to the ground. I expect next season it will send up the bigger ones and progressively start movi...

Re: Pruning to make bushier
Thanks. There’s a lot of branches below but few have leaves. I guess they all fell off after the light disappeared. Maybe they’ll grow some new ones after pruning. I’ve read cutting the thick culms as soon as they come up can also help control height.

Pruning to make bushier
I have some bamboo I planted as a privacy hedge. I believe the species is P. Rubromarginata. It has filled in nicely over the past 3 years and is now about 25-30 feet tall. The issue is it seems as though the foliage is now migrating towards the top of the canopy and thinning out on the bottom, whic...

Re: Help identifying some bamboo to use as privacy hedge
The bed is elevated a few inches and I dug a couple inch trench all the way around it. Last July and August the rhizomes were popping out like mad so I would just pull them up and lay them back in the bed redirected to an empty spot. From like October on I haven’t seen any rhizomes escape. So it sho...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180615/aa3e6b4c4a0af44e4a0e03f52f270546.jpg Just thought I’d give a 1.5 year update. Shooting is just about done and this stuff absolutely killed it. Had like 10 shoots come up over 20 feet and more than I cared to count in all. Seems like the straw/horse manure c...

Installing bamboo barrier
Im planning on planting bamboo on one side of my yard. This side of my yard is also a source of drainage which leads to my yard flooding. To deal with this, I'm going to install a trench with perforated pipe at the bottom and filled to the surface with crushed stone. The pipe will drain downhill to ...

And it just started shooting a few days ago. Here's a picture of one of them.

Re: Help identifying some bamboo to use as privacy hedge
Still no shoots from these yet. I stopped at the mother grove a few days ago and she isn't shooting yet either. There are two other species of bamboo in town and those are both shooting like crazy, so kind of surprising this one hasn't yet. I did notice a few of my plants seem to have some new spiky...

Re: Heavy poor draining clay
Thanks, I've been watering at least every other day for now because rain has been a little sparse lately and these were transplanted about 2 weeks ago now, so I'm trying to help them out as much as possible. I've had 2 culms and one plant out of 30 transplants turn brown and leaves shrivel up on me....

Re: Heavy poor draining clay
Here's an update on my raised bed. I thought it needed some more shape so I picked up a bunch of fence pickets and used them to make a retaining wall. Then I ordered 7 yards of a 50/50 mix of topsoil and horse manure. Real loose, black stuff. I topped off the bed with it. The bed is 6 ft wide by 80 ...

Help identifying some bamboo to use as privacy hedge
That's good to know, thanks. I imagine they'll be shooting within a few weeks then. Here's a pic of the grove I took these from. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170406/f448e5415a2cbecf39dc7817551e81fa.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170406/ddeecd87e296cc1b1b43836fdf8f7e1f.jpg Sent from my ...

Re: Heavy poor draining clay
so I spent a weekend excavating good quality soil from behind my house onto my raised bed. I took the level up about 2-3 inches more. Then I ordered 4 yards of topsoil for $200 and created about 15 mounds for the plants. I dug out the holes, filled with about 2 inches of humus and manure, placed the...

Re: Help identifying some bamboo to use as privacy hedge
That would be awesome if this is rubro because that's what I was going to buy. This weekend I just finished transplanting 30 divisions of this stuff. 20 to 30 ft plants. It was back breaking but saved me boatloads of money on buying from a nursery (so long as they actually take). My uninformed guess...

Help identifying some bamboo to use as privacy hedge
I found someone who was willing to part with some of their bamboo in my area, so I dug up 3 bunches of it. I'm looking to use it to make a privacy hedge that will be 7 feet thick, but I'm having my doubts if it will be dense enough to fill that area. I'll attach several pictures below. This person's...
