Well if you're crazy like me than nothing will get in the way of growing plants outdoors. Heating cables designed to go inside water pipes are just the thing for this if you have your heart set on this above ground containerized bamboo, but it'll cost in installation and winter heating. My solution to this problem with Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' was to plant grass behind the bamboo in a strip that was just wide enough to drive my pushing lawn mower down in a single pass. No shooting culms will survive that! and the grass gives me a nice place to walk to see things from both sides....

Hi all, 1st post here. Zone 6b garden (USDA zone temps). Desire tall narrow screen... doesn't everybody? :) I'm interested in making a tall relatively narrow screen 1 meter (3 ft) deep and about 10 meters (33 ft.) long. It'll have a 3 sided rhizome barrier with the front side open and rhizome pruned...
