Re: Seeds available

I have only had my seeds planted for about a week, but I haven't seen any signs of life yet.

Re: Parvifolia as a Companion Crop for less Hardy Timber Bam

Interesting idea. I'm hopeful for you since I live on a border of 6a/6b in southern Indiana and would love to plant some of the more marginal varieties as well. I'm not expecting to be able to grow Bambusoides up here, but it would be useful to know if it works.

Re: First shoots in 2019

The Spectabilis I planted from last year is taking off here in Southern Indiana with 5 shoots so far. https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Bamboo/i-bncWRw7/0/8348243c/XL/20190416_173635-XL.jpg Aureocaulis also has one shoot so far. My Rufa still doesn't have any shoots that I can find, but it got burne...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Southern Indiana

With 6" of rain over the weekend, I may not have to worry too much about watering bamboo while I'm gone.

Re: Need 3 bamboo identifications for a masters project

Not sure about the 1st one, but the 2nd one looks like Sasa Veitchii based on the different color around the leaf edges. The 3rd looks like Pleioblastus viridistratus, again based on leaf coloration. It could be some other variegated species though. Sasa veitchii: http://www.bamboogarden.com/Sasa%20...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Southern Indiana

No neighbor kids that you can pay to come over a couple of times and water (or refill the buckets)? Honestly no. I live pretty far out in rural southern Indiana so I don't have many neighbors at all nearby. I do have a couple of people who have agreed to come down a couple of times and check on thi...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Southern Indiana

Thanks Glen. I'm going to measure tonight and see how much hose I would need to cover everything. I'd love to eventually dig in a permanent line out by the bamboo so watering wouldn't require carrying water, but for now I don't want to have to worry about my plants drying out while I'm away. That ti...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Southern Indiana

So far, all my boos are still alive, no thanks to invading rabbits and a dry summer so far. Now I have another issue. In a few weeks I will be leaving for a 2 week motorcycle trip and will need some way to water my bamboo while I'm gone. The bamboo is planted far enough away from my house (~200 feet...

Re: Fargesia sp. 'Jiuzhaigou 1'

Good looking shoots. I'm going to have to get some Jiuzhaigou plants one of these days. They always look so good in pictures. I'm curious though, are Fall shoots a common occurrence? I just my first plants in the ground in Spring of this year (3 Phyllos and a Fargesia Rufa) and I was wondering if I ...

Re: Something is eating my bamboo!

My place in Brown County I noticed that the deer will snip off a branch or two and mostly leave it, I assume it is the new crop of deer checking things out. In winter they would wait until there were no other green plants and then pick one bamboo - usually a Sasa sp., and hit it hard. Good to know....

Re: Something is eating my bamboo!

Thanks for the tips. I picked up some 1" poultry mesh this weekend, but haven't had time to put it up. That'll be a project for this week. In the mean time, I also picked up some Liquid Fence Deer and Rabbit repellent and treated all of my plants with it. I'm hoping between that and the smaller...

Something is eating my bamboo!

My bamboo plants have been in the ground since late April this year and for the most part they've been trouble free. That is, until now. Early on I had something trying to dig up my new plants the first month or so after planting. I attributed that to a racoon or something being curious and possibly...

Re: white bamboo?

White bamboo! I've never seen that before. Hopefully it stays around and the rest of the grove has enough energy to keep it alive. It reminds me that there is actually a fantasy Japanese anime called Mushishi that has a white bamboo culm-lookalike called a "Magari-dake" http://mushi-shi.wi...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Southern Indiana

The plants have been in the ground for a few weeks and my new shoots are doing well! The largest by far is the Spectabilis with 1 shoot over 30" tall and has begun losing its culm sheaths at the bottom. https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Bamboo/i-wVn8h4k/0/43615799/X2/20180509_175717-X2.jpg The ...
