RE: B. vulgaris 'Wamin' discussion

That is Bambusa ventricosa with bellys, not B. vulgaris 'Wamin'. Vent. is more cold hardy which explains why it still has leaves and survived " ...the large number of days where we went into the high 20's and stayed cool. If you had Wamin both of your plants would have no leaves (or at least al...

RE: B. vulgaris 'Wamin' discussion

Vulgaris Wamin is sensitive to any cold weather. What did your lower temps get down to? Could there be enough temp change from the elevation to cause the drastic difference. The reason I ask is because mine really do bad as soon as the weather hits 30. For that matter I have a very hard time getting...

RE: what giant varieties do well in Fl. zone 8b

Boonut you might be right, maybe Moso needs cooler nights? My Moso in central Florida is in acidic soil with large azaleas and shaded by scrub oaks. Black, rich soil with earth worms. But if I dig down a few feet I hit white sand. The Moso just does terrible and I don't know why exactly. bamboodude ...

Re: RE: Manufactured Organic Fertilizers

at what rate do you apply chemical grass fertilizers. the rate recommended for lawns is not enough. my brandisii planted last summer from a 1gal bucket needs a push. Would love to hear what other people do but me? If it is truly a dependable timed release, one gallon in the ground, at least a 1/2 c...

Re: RE: Manufactured Organic Fertilizers

Why not Weed and Feed ? 24D is food for monocots and grasses. I use urea on bamboo myself. Cheap and high nitrogen. Seems like it would be considered organic as well. The real question might be why would you want to put herbicide on a bamboo as I would think they would not need weed control and wou...

RE: Manufactured Organic Fertilizers

I have found the organics don't have the highest nitrogen that bamboo really likes to devourer. Yes organics mean never burning your bamboo but bamboo is a grass that can really take lots of nitrogen without risk of burning especially with a timed release turf fertilizer. When I am trying to establi...

RE: Bambusa 'Hirose' anyone have pictures?

I understand 'Hirose' came from a seed or something that would make it different so one would think there should be some differences. One thing for sure is that the photos of it in Hawaii are truly amazing.

RE: Bambusa 'Hirose' anyone have pictures?

A while back I was looking for any differences between Bambusa 'Hirose' and Old hammii and in my unscientific and very brief observational mulling over them I concluded they look alike. I would think with a few more years of growth here on the mainland, they will be large enough that we should be ab...

You know the ones are so Eco friendly and everyone including big industry and government is pushing down my throat and they say they are better for...
