Nothing like coming late to the party....
My Tsuboi is flowering also. Noticed it this past week.
I shear it to the ground each winter, so it came out flowering.

Re: I thought I had Atrovaginata......NOT!
Thanks for the advice Steve, I have considered dulcis, hearing how quickly it sizes up. My Oregon Coast trip was great, we stopped by the Portland Chinese and Japanese gardens, the Oregon garden in Silverton. We also saw several lighthouses, the sea lion caves and the Tillamook cheese factory. Our l...

I thought I had Atrovaginata......NOT!
I am again looking for some Phyllostachys atrovaginata. The imposter was too small to ID and took the word of the trader that it was a true "atro". Well, this spring the shoots were large enough and wouldn't you know it, bright yellow grooves all up and down the culms. Plain old yellow gro...

Re: Bashania fargesii survey
Alan, I have an update on the spreading ability of Bashania fargesia. I didn't expect much this year but the small clump (5 culms 4-7 feet tall) has sent up strong shoots in three directions up to 3 feet away from the main clump. There are 8 new culms, each 6-8 feet tall. There is no hint of undergr...

Winter is Coming!
Our first winter snow storm rolled through this weekend. I had fun taking some pictures. The close up is a 14 foot culm, showing the amazing flexibility of bamboo. http://xs232.xs.to/xs232/08421/decora_down860.jpg http://xs232.xs.to/xs232/08421/14_ft_culm346.jpg http://xs232.xs.to/xs232/08421/tunnel...

No, it doesn't take much. Just wait till it snows! Those same places will be on the ground instead of at eye level.

RE: How to capture the waxy coating on Ph. glauca?
Thanks for the tips David. I can try getting closer and wetting the bamboo. Now that you mention it, I recall the bamboo looking good on overcast days. But I have a problem with shooting on overcast days, we have so few! It has been a long time since it rained last. The closest I get to an overcast ...

How to capture the waxy coating on Ph. glauca?
I have a Phyllostachys glauca that is beginning to display the waxy coating on the culms that is characteristic of this species. It looks great, but I am having a difficult time capturing that image in photographs. It seems that all my efforts lead to washed out pictures. How do I show the contrast ...

RE: Thamnocalamus tessellatus
I am not a good reference for how hardy Th. tess. is. I have taken extra precautions to protect it until it gets more mature. My Th. tess. started out very small and since it came late in 2005 I planted it in a very sheltered area near a wall of the house within my 'Decora' bamboo. This was fine for...

I believe it is "dimo" and it is used to give Chinese flutes their distintive sound.

RE: Rhizome barrier suggestions
Nate, I recently bought some 15 mil PVC flashing from Home Depot that I am going to try this year for one side of Ph. glauca to keep it out of a pathway. It was much cheaper than the 40 mil PE that I have for my Ph. decora, so for the price (<$1/ft) I thought "what the heck", i'll give it ...

RE: Astilboides tabularis
It's an optical illusion. There is a reflection, it is of the eave of the roof, it is in shadow so it doesn't show up as well as the bright sky and sunlit plants.
