R.I.P. Parker’s Giant

It saddens me to say, I have complete and total death of my Parker’s Giant. This years new shoots were looking great and putting out new healthy-looking branches and leaves. Then the flowers started to slowly take over until it’s completely covered. Guess I’ll dig up the dead carcass this spring and...

Re: Dendrocalamus Asper in South Italy

Wow, I didn’t know they were on everybody’s Craigslist! I harassed them so much here that they stopped posting on my local CL. Too funny. It seems like the same people that sold him his plants. Or one hell of a coincidence that it’s the same species

Re: Starting to plant

Man I can relate to your hand digging nightmare on a different level. Our soil on our property is fantastic. It was formerly an orange grove for generations. So many years of fallen leaf litter and rotten citrus has produced some seriously dark, rich soil. It’s much easier to dig holes in. But last ...

Re: Clumping Black Bamboo in subtropical area

My D. Minor (angel mist) has done well regarding the cold. But most of my clumps are close to my house which offers some protection. I’m also a firm believer that bamboos acclimate to cold, within a few degrees, if given enough exposure. I’ve had the same species planted side by side and have had m...

Re: Clumping Black Bamboo in subtropical area

Just an Update. I gave up on the black clumping bamboo after talking to many experienced growers and the feed back here. I have added to my current collection this year by purchasing 2 newly released bamboos from tropical bamboo. Bambusa tuldoides cv 'Swollen Internode (Cool Buddha) Its similar to ...

Re: Clumping Black Bamboo in subtropical area

Shu - B nana has been on my list, it has a unique look - in photos anyway, glad to hear it may be hardy enough for me to try. Yeah Brad, so far so good. When it first hit the market from Sherry Snodgress years ago the estimated cold hardiness wasn’t very impressive. I was really disappointed becaus...

Re: Sunburst or Asian lemon

Purely my opinion, B. Pervariabilis viridistriata (sunburst) is a more appealing plant with regards to overall appearance. It’s culms are larger in diameter, taller and the plant is a bit less bushy as the leaves are smaller. It’s not as quick to mature as B. Eutuldoides Viridivittata (Asian lemon) ...

Re: Bambusa textilis " Moralensis

No, not quite as nicely as the ones in the pic. Did you go to the nursery and check theirs out? Just curious if all of theirs are this heavily striped. If so, this is a great ssp. There are a few other species that give the plant in the pic a run for it’s money, but, they aren’t a textilis. The col...

Re: Bambusa textilis " Moralensis

Interesting. I’d like to see a side-by-side comparison between this and B. Textiles albostriata. Looks very similar except for the single predominantly yellow internode

Re: Salt Water/Bamboo...SOS!

Unfortunately, it’s going to be a wait and see kind of thing. I would think that it depends upon the amount of salt that was absorbed. If the leaves are yellowing then there was certainly some salt that made it into the plant. I would keep watering like crazy and hope for the best. Keep us posted

B. Parvariabilis Viridi Striata, aka Sunburst. The smaller leaves are a dead giveaway
