Advice needed for bamboo in zone 8b
Have someone looking to plant a 40 foot hedge and i'm not sure what to recommend as it is a colder zone than I am use to.
It is zone 8b (SW Georgia) gets teens in the winter once in a while low teens. Red clay soil. Clumper and 12 foot min height and width does not matter.
Suggestions?

Re: shoots that wont shoot
wills, yours looks like it gets alot of sun. mine is under an oak canopy. in a year or two it should be taller than the oaks and get more sun, maybe that will make the difference. Dudley, You could be right mine is in a very sunny spot. Some of mine are under the oaks and some in the open. I notice...

Dudley, I'm not far from you and my Kanapaha is doing great, wins the award for best upsizing this year out of the 14 species I have. I purchased it from Roy as a single culm 18 months ago. It shooted well last year and this year after putting out a couple short culms it exploded with 5 30 foot high...

Re: Milorganite warning
I will third the scarecrow recommendation. We have a circular drive that is planted with 8+ year old blueberry bushes, 17 of them. The deer adore the leaves and have always been a nuisance and trust me 9 deer at a time can create havoc. Have shot them with a bb gun and tried the aged pee thing which...

I live on a lake, have my own boat launch and a tractor with a fel, tractor goes down ramp, scoops and instant water transport. The boos even get a fish to eat now and then.

Re: C:N Ratios when composting bamboo
If you want it to breakdown faster pave a path or driveway with it a foot thick if you have one that is unimproved. The mechanical action of the vehicles traveling over the mulch will greatly speed the decay process. I would have thought that would be difficult to drive on. Even walking on 1' deep ...

Re: C:N Ratios when composting bamboo
I use the wood chips a ton. I get an unlimited supply as one of my neighbors is a director at our local electric company and he signs the contract with the tree service (Nelsons) for the utilities tree trimming work on their power lines so needless to say he has some pull:) They will give it to anyo...

Re: Planting method
I prefer the flood method and not tamping the soil at all..let the water do the settling for you. This is what I did when I planted them. I dug my trench and spread manure in the bottom then wet that down and after putting the bamboo in and topping it with more manure and dirt, I watered again. Ove...

My Dendrocalamus asper just sent up survival shoots last week so hope for your boo is not lost. You and I share just about the same conditions I would guess, though I am on a lake and it is planted 15 feet from the waters edge to help protect it somewhat.

Re: What types of compost work best for you?
I don't use compost. I use a combination of tree company trimmings piled on thickly with fresh rabbit manure and their urine soaked hay. When I plant a new boo I surround it with the wood chips in a circle larger than a childs wading pool and as the boo works it's way out I enlarge the circle. Works...
