Re: Recommendation for 8-12 ft bamboo for screen in zone 7b

Bissetii grows a lot taller than 8-12 feet when it matures though. Semi-Arundinarias are the right size, and S-A yashadake 'Kimmei" is a very nice looking plant, grows to the desired height. It will suffer die back (to ground) if hit with temps around 5F though. Same with the other Semi-A's com...

Re: My bissetii are flowering

Wow, bissetii flowering (and subsequently dying off) would be a big deal for me. My property is surrounded by bamboo for privacy screening, and a lot if it is bissetii. I do have several types bamboo mixed in, so I would not be completely exposed. But the bulk of it is bissetii by virtue of it being...

Re: Bamboo mites

According to what I read, the weather where I am is harsher than in Slovenia. It got to -5F (about -20C) here last winter, though that is not a regular occurrence, it does regularly get to 20F, (about -7C) here. it is my understanding, admittedly limited, that some species of predatory mites' eggs w...

Re: Bamboo mites

Thanks for the reply, good to know it would kill the plants and that damage varies.

I'm looking into predatory mites, trying to figure which species and what release date would be best. I know they won't solve the problem, but population could be established to mitigate, it would still be worth it.

Re: Bamboo mites

I have noticed mite infestations on a lot of my bamboos this year. They seem to go for some species more than others, but most are affected somewhat. I have perhaps 14 species of bamboo and many sub types. The mites are new my groves, and I have not introduced any new plants for several years. I'm t...

Re: How to know if bamboo will die to ground from cold?

It mostly looks OK, plenty of new shoots too. Some of the older culms probably had more of a die off than normal, and some of the taller, more exposed ones did not re foliate up to the top.

Re: Winter Kill

Reflecting on this year's freeze event, I'm wondering if sudden temp drop, which in my case was about 40 degrees in about 10 hours, affected leaf damage along with low temp and wind. In the last winter kill event I had in 2016 the low temp I recorded was -7F and the winds were just as strong as this...
