Re: Pavifolia different strategy

Oddly my P. parvifolia is producing 2 very large shoots and maybe a half dozen medium ones. Despite the cool spring with a few warm days the nights stay cool and yet it is the best all-round shooting season ever. However this may be due more to the age of the plants than the weather. Some did their ...

Re: Rufa sized up big time. Nitida... not so much.

Steve- My old generation F. nitida would send up shoots in mid to late August, a bad time oif year as it'sas dry as it gets here around that time. All the new gen ones seem to shoot in June, could be juvenility and they will get later as they mature. They are taking their good old time. Two NG nitid...

Fargesia robusta hardiness in eastern North America

On the weekend I was asked about the hardiness of Fargesia robusta 'Green Screen' for Nova Scotia - Z6a to Z5. Many likely know this one as F. robusta 'Pingwu'. I told them both this F. robusta, F. robusta 'Wenchuan'' and F. robusta 'Wolong' are apt to be killed in a normal Nova Scotia winter even o...

Re: Phyllostachys primotina

I also wonder if anyone wonder photographed the arcana seed. The "primotina" seed looked fairly distinctive to me but perhaps not as I've only seen kwang & flexuosa seed.

Re: Phyllostachys primotina

Steffen: Does P. arcana itself show any of the characteristics of the seedlings we are growing? i.e. Especially the darkish internodes. A friend grows P. arcana but it is not very happy, just a little too cold for it. Here are some old pix I took of his P. arcana, I realize these characteristics may...

Re: Fargesia murielae NG after winter 2017

No thank-you Brad but at least it's cooling off somewhat at night out there. Only made it to 16c here todayon the coast but it was 29 or 30c inland.

Re: Fargesia murielae NG after winter 2017

Brad - Attached is today's weeklong forecast. Nightime temps will not rise much until mid July as a rule. Gives you an idea of Fargesia conditions here.

Closest weather station is not Hfx. airport which is inland but Shearwater Airport which is right on our harbour..

Re: bamboo mulch

When do you cut Arundo down? I've heard wait till new shoots appear rather than in the autumn. Good to know about the silica content.

Mine a week ago. With last week's heat it's apt to have shot up a bit especially after the accompanying rain.

Re: Phyllostachys primotina

Thanks David.

Perhaps Steffen of the German EBS can summarize their findings on P. primotina. Unless you are an EBS member the search finction will not work. My seeds of it came from Munich where it was considered to be of borderline hardiness.

Re: melting pot

Wow, the foliage is far better than I imagined. Had an idea - from mine - the foliage is small, no doubt from being in a pot too long.

This J#1 surely is the best of the Juizhaigous.

Eucalyptus

This Eucalyptus got so big I couldn't dig it last autumn and haul it into the greenhouse. Just noticed this!
