There is a very very old clump of peony in the back yard here. They have to be at least 50 years old. They are completely white, and some have a small splash of red.
Yesterday i noticed one of the stems broken on the ground and the flower is HOT pink and seems to be double. The scent is also more potent then the existing clump. They have never set seed. Was wondering what happened/

Re: Peony mutation?
Most likely the original was grafted on the pink double or vice-versa. A common nursery propagation practice awhile back.

Re: Peony mutation?
Why would they graft a mostly white single onto stock from a double pink with superior fragrance? Oh well, I don't know that much about peonies... and to each their own.

Could be the pink was grafted on the white and didn't shoot first.
