Exotic looking hardy bamboo?

Post by Chris L »

A hardy bamboo for zone 6 that will look similar to this at maturity...

Image

Know of any?

What do I like the best about it? I like how the bamboo is upright and only weeps on the top.

You might like Semiarundinaria fastuosa.

While Semiarundinaria fastuosa does look great and will grow in Zone 6, it does get burn down to the ground about every 3 year in Charleston, WV where my brother grows it. His P. nigra is doing well there. P. v. Robert Young is still alive, but not doing that well. P. bissetti is also doing well but weeps probably more that you are looking for. There is lots of P. arueosulcata growing in the area, which is the sure thing in the area.

Thanks, but does Semiarundinaria fastuosa really weep on top? From all I pictures I've seen it looks very upright....

I have bissetti. It's a nice bamboo, but I doubt it will look anything like the bamboo in the picture above when mature.

Semiarundianria fastuosa can develop a weeping form quite unlike its sun-grown stiffly upright form when grown in part shade and all of its running shoots are removed to force it to grow as a tight clump. Here's pics of the one in my garden.

A particularly weeping branch
