I was wondering if anyone is growing this and is there any real difference from normal fastuosa so far ?
I have a small plant from last year, too small to see anything much, it has a few new culms coming that should show colour this Fall. The plant also made a small culm out the bottom of the pot so I took this as a division for a friend, what I did not know was how much rhizome growth in the pot I had. When I made the division I ended up having to cut out a couple of rhizomes , both these have a single shoot now, so I guess they will make nice small divisions by next year.
Also does anyone have a pic of a larger Phyllostachys kwangsiensis and/or Phyllostachys prominens? A shoot shot would help too as I have rhizome cutting I've mixed up.
Many Thanks
Steve

Re: Semiarundinaria Red Fall and others
Steve, I had the fall red planted out, it did not turn red at all and did not like winter. I dug it out and have been container growing it for a couple years since - never any red at all. It has a somewhat unique branching habit, much shorter branches than S fastuosa, looks more like an extremely attractive Arundinaria. It appears to leaf out heavily on the main stems so that it looks like an asiatic lily - long thin leaves clustering up the culm. I have it on my deck and people often go 'Wow, that is nice". Bamboo Garden had a Semiarundinaria 'Korea' that this reminds me of.
I'll link you to shoot photos of Kwang & Prom from threads here in another reply.

Prominens photo from Jos, via Mark!

Prominens photo from here:

Kwangsiensis photo from me:

I'd look for crinkled blades on the Prom, not so much on the Kwang.

Re: Semiarundinaria Red Fall and others
Thanks again guys , the shoot is a mix of the first two pics by Brad but as it's a whipshoot and perhaps from late last season I'll need to wait for a true shoot to see for sure what it is.
The second pic of Brads looks very Shanghai 3 like to me, but S3 has more mottled spots normally.
Thanks again

Steve, in this photo you can really see the unique nodes on the prominens that I had mentioned in our call recently.
