Bamboo Noobie in the house!

Post by PhatBamboo »

Hello everyone, name is Randy, im from Tampa, Florida (USA) area and just stumbled onto this forum. I just started growing some bamboo a few years ago for a screening / privacy fence, and now im hooked on the tropical look, and super fast growth rate.

We got hit this year with some 30 year low temps that killed off a lot of my other tropicals I was growing (Plam, Bananas, Alocasia, vines, etc) lots of carnage, :x ugh, but the bamboo I have in the ground did not even loose a single leaf, even at 19 degrees!!! (Seabreeze Bamboo) Needless to say that got me more interested in the rest of the species available.

Anyhow, I was just down in South Florida on a business trip and stopped by a bamboo grower, and wow, they had some amazing stuff!! I managed to buy a few Black, Yellow, and other bamboos to take home to play around with.

Here are some pictures i took at the bamboo nursery, enjoy!

Im sure i will be back in here to pick up some knowledge from you guys, thanks!

Yes, welcome! (Even though you're one of those tropical guys who gets to grow the huge clumpers that behave.)

Welcome neighbor. This stuff is more addicting than cold beer, well at least tied with cold Beer

If your ever over north of Lakeland give me a hollar and we'll have a cold one and go for a Boo walk

I've only been growing boo for 2 years now so every thing is still sorta small but my Chungii, Mutabilis and ventricosa are putting up some nice culms this year

excellent, do you have any pictures? How did your bamboo fair in the super strange cold snaps we had this year?
