Oh, just a small project...

Post by Eastlandia »

Some of my Family just got back from Hong Kong. (not me :( )
This is some of the buildings they saw. Oh, and the bottom photo is of a few people harvesting culms...can you see the baskets? What species is it?

Once the culms are striped and made into baskets, it is very difficult to determine what species of bamboo was used to make the basket.

sorry, I worded the question wrong. Im wondering what species they are cutting down, for after all it still has sheaths on its culms. -eastlandia

That picture is too small to see, but if the culms still have their sheaths, then there is a strong probability for them to be new culms for the season and not a species that holds its sheaths. Most likely just a Bambusa sp. as it is the most common large clumper in S.E. China. It is still the shooting season over there.

JackK,

I agree with you. From the small image of the sheaths, one could make the case that the sheaths do not look to be tightly wrapped around the culms and that they will be falling to the ground soon.

I've always read that culms should be four/five years old before harvesting for Pole's and only then do they attain full strength. Anything a year old would be very week, and most susceptible to beetle attack

On the powder post beetle front,is it a problem in Florida?

From my end, on the beautiful SunCoast of Florida, I don't have any problems with them. On the other hand, I don't have any shelters built of bamboo.

Just a guess, but, perhaps they're harvesting the younger culms so they have more flexible material for making into baskets.
