Post by nu2bamboo »

Well here it goes. My first attempt at posting pictures. Hope it works.

I did some yard work today and decided to take a few pictures of the yard as well as the bamboo. I hope you like what I have done so far. I am half way with my collection. Hopefully the pictures didn't come out too bad.

nu2bamboo,

Can you give us some more details on your plants? What I would like to know, about the bamboo clumps in your pictures, is how long have they been in the ground and what were the sizes of the plants when you planted them.

I am very jealous of all the room you have. Your place is going to look amazing in a few years. 8)

I'm really interested to see what the above picture looks like in 5 years. It should be an impressive sight. :)

Roy,

For the most part they were planted late 2006.

The Bambusa ventricosa 'Golden Buddha', clone x, the oldhamii, and the Kimmei were your one gallon pot specials I got from you and planted in 2006. The lako is a freebee from Booking in October of 2006. I have had serious temp. problems with that one. Every time it starts doing good it gets hit hard by 24 -25 deg. temps in the winter and dies back. The angel mist was just planted a month ago. It has not put any new shoots yet. The chungii had two small shoots and are still there you can see them in the middle of the picture. The Bambusa Eut. viriditatta has been the fastest growing it was a single shoot in a three gallon pot planted in July of 2006.

The graceful was the first bamboo I planted. It started the obsession. It was a 3 gallon pot with two small shoots about 5 feet tall. The multiplex silverstripe had several shoots and was in a 15 gallon pot. That was also planted in 2006.

The mutabilis is pretty much the same story. 3 gallon pot planted late 2006.

I also have a Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata' planted between the Buddha and the clone x. It too has problems with the cold. It was planted last summer. But, It died back a bit over the winter. It has yet to put up any new shoots since being planted. It's still green but very slow going. One of the potted boo is a Vittata. It seems to be doing great in the pot. When it gets cold I brink it into the garage for protection.

The other two I have in pots I have no idea what they are. Got them from a friend who didn't know much about them.

I am still looking to add at least 10-12 more types to the collection. Some this year and the rest next.

I too got one of these from Booking... I'm sorry to say it isn't a B. lako. So far it is leaning towards being a D. strictus seedling (seedling being a relative term since mine just put up a 18' shoot). I have a real B. lako from Boonut, and I can tell you that these two plants are very different... leafs don't look alike, branch structure is different, shoots look different, etc. I know the one from Boonut is a true lako. I'm not 100% positive on the D. strictus ID for the the plant from Booking, but I'd say I'm approaching 75% certainty.

I'll try to remember to take comparative pictures this weekend.

nu2bamboo,

I will have say that your bamboo must like your backyard because it really has grown a lot in a very short time. Thanks for the update.

Looking good nu2!
I do have a question though. I've never seen B. v. "Golden Buddha" for sale anywhere here in the states.
According to the Species List is is not in the country. May I inquire as to where you purchased it?

Thanks,

Mike

It's probably a localized name for this: Bambusa ventricosa 'Kimmei'

Not this:

Bambusa ventricosa 'Golden Buddha'

I'll agree with that Roy.
I'm always on the lookout for 'new' clumpers showing up in this country.
I thought one slipped by me! :o

Nice but holy cow what a lot of mowing you must have to do.

We have a few acres and have been slowly getting rid of as much grass as humanly possible and replacing it with Dutch White clover which is the short growing kind.

It looks super lush and much greener than grass, you don't have to mow it, it grows on anything from gravel to sand to really compacted hard clay and it can take a little walking around on it, it seems to crush flat then the next day it's sprung right back up like it was never walked on at all.

Trouble is they don't make grass killer so you have to manually pull out any grass you missed.
