Here are some great pics of D. Validus shooting like crazy

What a gorgeous plant. I really have to say its becoming one of my favorites. I love the leaves which are short and fat. And the growth pattern is a bit crooked and stout with branch ends weeping - kind of reminds me of a tree in form and shape.

BUT... the new culms wow!!!! What a jumper. The largest new shoot is 4" in diameter (plant is 3 yrs old bought as a tiny 3 gal from Tropical Bamboo.

They are an amazing rust/red in color (photos not doing justice). And for some reason a local butterfly is drawn to them and it would be hard to get a photo without of the butterflies.

Great photos, that sure is an impressive specimen! Should gain some good height for you this year with the diameter of those new culms.

The contrasting colours that the shoots have is stunning.... I read that butterflies operate in the ultraviolet spectrum, perhpas they apear to be very large flowers :D Either way thank you for sharing

I have Validus and am amazed at how fast it put on size the first season. However, for the last two years I have had winter temps into the low 20's which pretty much froze it back to the ground. It finally sent up two new shoots that were about the same size as last years shoots. Hoping for a mild winter so this thing starts putting on some size!
Someday maybe I'll find a bamboo my wife likes...in the meantime I'll keep planting more!
