Books

Post by Joe Shmoe »

Hi folks.

Anyone recommend a decent bamboo book?

I've read Paul Whittakers 'Hardy Bamboo - taming the dragon', and found it a really good read.

I've read it cover to cover so many times that I thought its about time I got something else to read instead :D

I like these three as well:

David Crompton, Ornamental Bamboos
Ted Meredith, Bamboo for Gardens
Ted Meredith, Timber Press Pocket Guide to Bamboos (contains many of the same plant descriptions as Bamboo for Gardens, but there are quite a few new ones as well; not as much info about plant physiology, propagation, etc.)

Also ..Mike Bells' book ... 'The Gardeners Guide to Growing Temperate Bamboos'

Not much on Tropicals ...as the name implies - It's mainly for the UK and Europe.

But it's a great book though - lovely writing style and written with a real depth of knowledge... it's what got me hooked.... :D

Regarding tropicals, I like Victor Cusack's Bamboo Rediscovered. He's quite outspoken about his love of clumpers vs. runners. The book contains information about rare tropical species that isn't found elsewhere in print form (not that I can grow them here, but I like to read about them).

I saw a mention somewhere of a recent book translated from chinese which is a compendium of information about bamboo and how it is used. I went looking for the reference yesterday and couldn't find it, but I believe it was mentioned on one of the Yahoo groups a few months ago.

BTW, I didn't see BAMBOO: THE GIFT OF THE GODS on the ABS list of books.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.
