Hard by Kilauea volcano in an alpine rainforest at 4,000 feet
wamin
I can understand your concern Roy, I've never wanted to top any boo either but When I planted the wamin I didn'y know I would build a greenhouse near enough to have the morning winter sun blocked. So I was about to move the boo (horrors!) until I read the blurb at Quindembo. We all know digging bamboo is a last resort, right? Now it can stay where it is and I'm happy.

I've always been kind of a "digger" as far as bamboo is conerned. When the bamboo gets in the 50 foot range and is a very tight clumper, then that's another story.

RE: wamin
Shima, a few years back I ID'd Volcano as one of, if not the only place in Hawai'i that I'd consider if we wanted to return for the 3rd time. Closest place on earth I can think of to my ideal climate and I bet that you can grow more species of bamboo there than just about anywhere. From the tropical clumpers to the Himalayan species and in between I bet they'll all do well there. Have you tried any besides the Wamin?
