Culms Completing Dying Post-Topping

Post by Sushi542 »

Good morning,

I have 8 different bamboo species and have I am recently experiencing a problem with one of my Tropical Black bamboo clumps. In the past I could top new culms to a desired height, no problem, just the usual die-back to the first node. However, now when I cut the new culms back they eventually begin to tan, from the top down, node by node, and then die. It's very painful to see this happen, as I'm sure you all can appreciate. This clump has been in the ground for over four years. The other bamboo I top without any ill effects are Asian Lemon, Buddha Belly, Chinese and Golden Goddess, and Timor Black (never topped the Gracefuls or Tropical Blue). I am stumped as to why the culms are dying on the Tropical Black whereas before it tolerated this well. Any ideas?? THANKS
