Jason did get your Joseph de Jussieu? I have it coming from France at the moment I am interested what the difference from suow is, from what I have read they seem the same but I am sure there not, but it will be nice to compare the actual plants

yeah it seems similar but occasional white/cream stripe on the leaf. mine was really small 1 gallon and I need to walk up the hill to make sure its ok. I put into a 3 gallon but it was 11 degrees a few days ago at night with a few other teen nights, so I am hopeful its ok

I have a small one as well, too small to tell really but it has a green sulcus it seems - assuming a sulcus is there it may just be a stripe, mine has a new shoot about a foot tall so I'll see a new culm soon.

should also note the variegation is minimal. the few stripes are like fine pinstripes . not sure if it will get larger stripes or not.

Found another pic of your 'suow' Deane, very nice looking indeed. Now I really can't wait for mine to get here!

I have no intention of putting mine in the ground here, but do you happen to remember if that leaf damage was from cold, and if so...what the temps were that caused it?

I don’t get lower than -5c but last winter we had -12c winds apparently so I would think this is why I got quite a bit of leaf damage but it has soon grown it out now, what lows do you get ?

Last winter we hit -15F...which is exactly appropriate for my zone 5. We are consistently under a high of 32f for 3-4 months, except one or two days in there, in any month, where it will warm up to 45 or 50 midwinter for no good reason. The biggest problem I forsee is we are frequently at or below lows of 0F for days long stretches, and it is typically windy with it.

That being said, last winter, even with the -15F, and 20+ days with a low below 0F, my 3 culm, 2 gallon, bissetii was buried in its pot, soil levels even, with about 2 feet of leaves, and anywhere from 6" to 3 feet of snow on top of that, and it never dropped below 31F. at soil level based on my remote temp sensor. That was only one night, and the rest of winter it ranged 38-32F. It survived green, I burned the leaves with spring sun, it made 7 culms 3/16" ish by ~2 feet, and leafed back out fine. I lost the top 12" of one culm that I left exposed, on purpose.

At present all of the newest shoots on mine have reverted to solid green, I believe previously they were yellow at sheathfall.

I've definitely seen it stated several places that "it can produce normal solid green culms" or "remove solid culms to retain the striped appearance." Not that it matters, but is that one still potted or in ground there?

In-ground here.
