Moso shooting 2 weeks early. Hopefully the gophers or a late freeze doesn't do them in. 10 shoots so far, hoping for about 40

How old does the grove have to be before it starts producing $5 or $10 bills?

I think you're seeing it wrong Alan. It's not growing the $1, it's sucking it away into the ground. My groves are already sucking many $5 and $10 bills away, along with my energy and time

I've tried feeding it every thing else without luck, althuogh I suppose $1 is getting kind of cheap. Over 30 shoots so far.

Nice work, moso shoots are impressive once they get just a little girth on them, very hairy dragon-like things. Anderson CA must be a tad cooler than the central valley?

It's working so far, the dollar bill is gone but the shoot is now over 7 feet tall. Anderson, Ca. is actually one of the hottest places in the valley. I let my Dulcis grove grow up to the Moso and it shades it somewhat from the hottest afternoon sun but still suffers from the heat. There are some larger shoots back in the dulcis grove but I don't want to walk in for pics. It looks like it's fially starting to gain size.

Moso can get burnt by intense sun and heat, and during the summer, leaves can look rather ratty and dehydrated. But does it really suffer? I have a feeling it's more than happy to stay in fully exposed position, at least around here. Leaves that are protected by it's own foliage are dark green and healthy, it's getting more and more drought tolerant with increasing diameter and depth of it's roots, same goes for winter hardiness.

The more sheltered division in partial shade had shown almost no growth at all, while the sun exposed Moso thrives. A bit uglier from time to time, but way healthier overall.

PS: I'll have to eradicate it, because there's not enough space for it.

Do you know if you started out with a division from a mature grove or a seedling?

Brad, I bought this as a 2 gallon plant from Bamboo garden in Oregon 14 years ago. 2 years after I bought it I asked that very question to Ned jaquith, He said he couldn't be sure of what (batch) it came from. All things considered I think it's a pretty hardy pick. As a side note I have a very fond memory of being shown around his nursery and enjoying his passion and knowledge of bamboo. Here's a latest pic from more of the protected side.

Awesome looking shoots, those hairy dragon style moso shoots. How has Dulcis done for you? I didn't bring mine out here but I did bring green form Viridis which is supposed to do well in very dry conditions.
