Most characteristic bamboo specie - am I missing something?

Post by alfred »

Hello,

I owm a small collectiong of bamboo and always chose certain species over others for their distinctive features (swollen nodes, dark culms, turtle-shaped nodes, ruscus-like leaves, solid culms, large leaves etc.), so I'd like to know if I'm still missing something peculiar (no cultivars/mutants though) not comprised in this list:

Bambusa ventricosa
Chusquea culeou
Indocalamus latiflorus
Phyllostachys aurea
Phyllostachys nigra
Sasa veitchii
Shibataea kumasaca

Thank you :)

Alfred

Any suggestions are welcome, don't hold back, at worst I'll write them down in my unrealizable wishlist. I'm in zone 9b.

I think you are missing plenty! In no particular order:

Bambusoides marliac or Phy aureosulcata Harbin - culms with vertical striations/grooves
Chimonobambusa quadrangularis 'Suow' - yellow square culms w/green sulcus
Chimonobambusa tumidissinoda - swollen nodes
Phy nidularia - bigger swollen nodes

Check out photos of:
Shibataea lancifolia
Sasa palmata
Sasa tsuboiana
One of the yellow forms of Phy vivax
Indocalamus tessellatus/hamadae form
Pleioblastus viridistriatus/Chrysophyllus
Pleioblastus distichus 'Mini'
Otataea acuminata
Phy glauca 'Yunzhu'
Fargesia denudata
Pseudosasa amabilis
Sinobambusa variegata
Hibanobambusa - both forms
Pleioblastus linearis
Chusquea culeou Hilliers form

Want more?
