I suspect this is the case. Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Slender Crookstem' is another clone that is said to be significantly hardier than the "normal" form of P. bambusoides, so it is already established that P. bambusoides clones do vary considerably in cold hardiness.
Is bambusoides not as generally hardy then, I find them good growers here but we don’t get it that cold -5c generally lowest

Here are some photos of pingyangensis, bambosoides type, and lithophila for comparison taken today. This winter we had 4 days of highs in the 20's and lows at 0 to 5° F.
