Indoor Bamboo

Post by Clark »

The entry in my house has a 18 foot ceiling height. It also has a 5x12 south facing window, so the space receives plenty of sun year round. What would be a good Bamboo to grow in this spot. It will be the main focus point for the majority of the house, so the cooler looking bamboo the better (even though all bamboo is cool).

Not speaking from experience, but it's kinda hard to beat this one for decorative value, visual interest, exoticism:

you'll need to trim the branches below head height, and top the culms when they get too tall

As long as he keeps it in a pot and brings it in during the Minnesota winters.

Slightly off topic and hopefully not hijacking this thread  ,but one new bamboo here is reckoned to do very well inside, better than the usual B. Multi forms. I picked up a small one a year or so ago and..... it's still small

Athrostylidium naibuense.

Anyone got some info on this
Bamboo...Please note... This plant is seriously addictive and you may lose interest in other, less rewarding plants!

Clark, the plan is to have a nice display inside the foyer of the house right? A mature Wamin is nice... Vitatta is another nice looking one... yellow culms with an occasional green stripe on them with deep green leaves that also occasionally have yellow streaks. Do a image search for vitatta and see what mature one look like. Clumper types for sure though...unless you don't mind chopping off the escapee rhizomes from time to time ;-D
Take care and happy hunting

If you do use a runner in a pot, make sure the pot doesn't get a larger diameter in the center...then you cant get the root-bound plant out after a few years....its either massive dissection or a broken pot. -eastlandia
