Please help a newbie - PLEASE.

A big Giant Newbie here in So. Cal.
I know the common names and am learning as fast as I can in here all about Bamboo.

I have Robert Young, Japanese Timber and Vivax.
Planted June of 2006 from five gallon pots

All three are heavily infested with the Tiny white Aphid (or is it mite?)...it secretes a heavily sticky white substance.
I had the problem last year exterminated the Ants and have no ants at the moment and used a soapy mixture and spray with a hard stream of water periodically and eliminated them in about a month.

Well now it is real bad and especially bad on the Japanese Timber.
last year was fairly easy to eliminates because I had only few Culms and they were not very tall.
now they are about 12 feet tall and Many culms.

Can you please help me figure out how to get rid of them.
Will I battle this every year?
Why do I have them if I have no ants?

P.S NONE have any shoots yet....In So Cal should they not be shooting now?

I love this Site.
I now love Bamboo and am getting good at spotting it everywhere and working hard still on identification.
(I love going to the Zoo's around here!)
everyone keep up the good work here as you team us all so much.

Welcome to the only "legal" grass adiction!

in spring we get aphids too, and they can make a mess out of your plants. One produce that I have found that works quickly, and very well, to get rid of them is a product by Bayer, you will find it in most nurserys, as well as the chain stores. It is a systemic insecticide, and will kill off the aphids in a matter of a few days, and keep them off for the season. I use the tree and shrub variety. It is in a blue/grey bottle, about the size of a quart oil bottle.

as for shooting, I dont have any robert young, but I do have vivax and timber, and both of those shoot late for me, around june. you may be earlier due to warmer weather, but I would think that it is still way to early for those species.
best of luck on your plants!

Well, believe it or not, that's good news.

Got any pictures you can show?
