Wamin in decline
My variegated wamin is in serious decline. It looks like some type of nutrient deficiency, but I'm not sure. At first it was only on the new shoots, but now is showing up on old growth too. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Without seeing the photos, what have you done with regard to feeding, fertilizing, etc? How's the water situation?

Paul,
I know that you live in St. Pete, Florida, but I have to ask anyway. Do you happen to live in a cold spot and perhaps these were new shoots that were coming up this past Winter and they got some cold/freeze damage? Just had to ask to get this one thought out of my head that perhaps that might be an answer? The rest of your foliage on the plant looks great.

RE: Wamin in decline
My first thought after seeing the pictures is a fungus of some sort on the newer growth. Does the wamin get water via aerial delivery? You may want to water it from the bottom if so.
When was the plant last fed/fertilized? Could it be burned from fertilizer?
Lastly, are there any changes you have made lately from your regular routine?
Thanks,

That was my thought... fertilizer or insecticide damage. Having done that myself several times, it does look familiar. There are definitely other causes though...

I'm wondering if perhaps some type of herbicide such as Roundup got accidentally sprayed on the new culms?boonut wrote:That was my thought... fertilizer or insecticide damage. Having done that myself several times, it does look familiar. There are definitely other causes though...

RE: Wamin in decline
Possible viral infection? I have seen other types of plants react in a similar manner. My other vote would be herbicide as mentioned by the others..... do you have a neighbor who perhaps does not like bamboo.... or you?
RE: Wamin in decline
Do you use Weed & Feed for your lawn?
RE: Wamin in decline
Look real close and I mean real close for very tiny webbing. I would suspect spider mites. They get to my Tiny Fern leaf Stripe stem and the damage looks real similar. A heavy dosing with insecticidal soap my do the trick if that is what you have. the webbing is very tiny and hard to see but as I say it looks real close to the damage they do to the tiny fern leaf.

right between too cold & not cold enough
RE: Wamin in decline
first photo shows aborted shoot on right
second photo mature culm with all branches dieing
third photo close up of dead branches
so far other shoots look good
no insecticides or fertilizer recently.
dont see how it could be herbicide because it is an inside culm and outer ones would be damaged as well.
have not watered in a month but rain has been adequate.
any guesses?

I still think it may be a fungus......
are you having warm nights? water in the evening or morning?

He lives in Florida, so the answer is "Yes" to all three of those questions.

I am having a fungus problem in my lawn right now, Grass fungus thrives on warm humid conditions.
Is there a fungus that is specific to bamboo or these condtions? A fungicide that might work?
What other possibilities exist here?
