Alan-
Why does the label scare you? It's wise to exercise precaution with any chemical, but the label doesn't bother me . Further, I talked to a Ph. D. toxicologist about abamectin and his take was that it was pretty tame stuff...at least regarding humans and pets. I wear long sleeves and a face mask when I spray with Avid, but that is mainly because I worked as an environmental engineer most of my life and I'm neurotic!

Here is a link to a good write-up on abamectin which will either make you more comfortable or more neurotic, I'm not sure which: http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/pesticides/inf ... mectin.pdf

For me the key points are that it rapidly degrades in soil and water, is non-toxic to bees after a few hours, and there is no uptake from the soil by plants. I prefer to use this once a year -- if I have to -- rather than do repeat applications of less effective pesticides.

this is good to know:
For optimum control, apply abamectin when the leaves are young to allow
better absorption into leaf tissue. This will extend the residual control period.
As leaves age and harden off they lose the ability to take up abamectin and
residual control is greatly reduced.

Yes, I usually like to spray in about May here, but did spray once in the late summer, with good results, when I had a particularly bad infestation that I had let go too long.

rhum23-
Sorry, but I don't know what commercial name it may be sold under in France. You should see what kind of Google France search you can do on the active ingredient: abamectin. Here is the label for the U.S. brand I use, Avid. Maybe you can contact the U.S. manufacturer to see if it is sold under the same or a different name in France, or contact a local nursery supply house and show them the info to get a lead.

One other thought is to contact La Bambouseraie de Prafrance and see what they use.
