The bamboo list was finalized last night. I added (1) D. a. Hitam. We are bringing in a lot more numbers of the plants already listed. This will be the best selection and numbers of bamboo offered at March Mart.

I am really excited for March Mart. Now that spring is in full swing I have the bug to get out and play with bamboo. 8)

Closing is in 10 days!

I think it is a combination of a bunch of different things... land for sure, but also that Bamboo Outlaw and myself have been busy preparing for March Mart starting back around October.

Also, last weekend we spent Friday digging up some bamboo, and then preparing cuttings for the monthly Mercer bamboo meeting. Saturday we spent at Mercer Arboretum doing some grove maintenance, and then potting up the cuttings. Sunday we planted the digs from Friday. A full weekend of bamboo work. 8)

WOOO HOOOO!

10 days, then you get to lug water around by the bucketfull.... come August were are going to be hearing a different tune

a full weekend of bamboo sounds like fun! what do you guys do with the cuttings for the mercer meeting? do they go to members, use as display, or educational how-to?

that would be cool.... have a bamboo club, kind of like a desert club where everyone brings a division and gets togeather to share......

The cuttings have 3 purposes. 1) Grove maintenance... cut out the leaning, ugly culms to make the clumps look better. 2) Teach the members how to properly cut/divide/propagate bamboo, so they can try it on their own plants. 3) Produce plants to sell at the Mercer sales throughout the year to raise funds for the gardens. 8)

On occasion the members will get to bring something home. The January meeting we divided some B. ventricosa, and everyone who wanted a small division was welcome to take one.

I see the meetings as a way to educate people about bamboo, and help out the arboretum by maintaining their groves.

Bamboo Outlaw has much more experience with the meetings (I've only been attending for a couple years now), so he'll have a better explanation of the "mission statement". This comes from Mercer's website:

"Mercer Bamboo Meetings: Fourth Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. Monthly meetings feature hands-on training in Mercer’s bamboo garden."

Took me a second to figure this out. That is a neat idea, but I'm guessing some people would feel bad because they'd show up with something rare, like Sunburst, and get a Golden Goddess in return.

but if you did not have golden goddess, and had lots of sunburst.....

okay, I guess you are right... be kind of like when I was part of our local reef tank club locally, and we would have frag swaps..... some of the newbies would show up with algae, or mushroom polyps to share.... somone always felt bad for them though, and by the end of the meeting, they usually found someone who would give them something cool, or trade them out of what they brought, and dump it into a holding tank or something

got to encourage the newbies too!
