Here's my biggest shoot out of all the seedlings from 1 year ago, pretty close to around 5/16 inch in diameter and already over 1 foot tall.

Rubromarginata is producing only 2 shoots which appear to be about the same size as the originals.

Just a quick comparison after a couple years of growth. First picture is from when they were planted in fall 2008. The next 2 pics were taken today. Its a mixed grove of alata and nigra. Yeah I would have separated them if I knew then what I know now. Oh well, Im just letting them do their thing now.

Brachystachyum densiflorum

7 not shooting yet, not counting the Bambusa ventricosa.
Southern Indiana.
My Bamboo List.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

roscoe: It looks like the bamboo has escaped the initial planting area. If that's so, is the black plastic border in the first photo just an edging material, or is it actually rhizome barrier?

P Propinqua beijing is showing a few shoot and some of my Vivax aureocaulus rhizome divisions are shooting. One of them is over 1/2 inch in diameter which is pretty large for a rhizome division, but likely to have compressed internodes due to the lack of foliage to support the growth.

P Dulcis has a lot of new leaves already, but like F Nitida, it's still showing no signs of shoots despite the warm weather.

P Rubromarginata is producing 2 shoots over 4 inches tall already which is much fewer than I would expect given it has 5 existing culms.

Alan, thats some scrap sheet metal I used as a temporary border. The idea was that I would not walk, mow, or do anything inside that border until after they sent up shoots. I didnt really know anything about growing this stuff at the time, except that shoots would probably appear quite aways from the original planting, which they did. Ive since removed the border now that I know what to look for, and am a bit more familiar with its habits. I never intented to contain it. I will rhizome prune if need be.

That's good news. I was thinking it was rhizome barrier, and I had a lot of follow-up questions as to why it would have failed so spectacularly. :D

Chimonobambusa marmorea 'Variegata which I decided to plant outside due to poor heatlth of the plant surprised me with several blood red shoots. The bamboo is very ragged in appearance so I don't know what to expect down the line.

Just some more shoot pictures.

Aureosulcata shoot shows the growth from the exposed new sheath not yet tanned by the sun which is pretty significant growth for 1 night given it has several internodes.
Image

moso seedling- biggest diameter shoot out of all of them near 1/3 inch.
Image

P parvifolia with around 5-6 shoots either same size or smaller than last years. Don't know why but I hope larger ones come up.
Image

P humilis growing like a weed.
Image

Finally a 1/2 inch moso shoot/culm showing dark specks on the sheath which was hardly visible last year. They should continue to get more specks with summer shoots and really darken up by next year.

Steve- How is it that your bamboo are shooting like mad and mine or only just beginning?
This isn't fair! I'm only 100km north of you!
