The shoots usually start out coming horizontally off the original clump, then turn upwards and keep increasing in diameter throughout the whole process, and generating 5 new shoots on a 2 month old seedling. is pretty good since many of them haven't even made their first shoot yet, and the 2nd best one from the same batch only has 2 new shoots. The ones that are very prolific usually stay that way so I wouldn't be surprised to see it put out over 30 shoots by the end of the year.

I think they should take at least 2 years in order to develop rhizomes.

This has to be the best growth and expansion of all the bamboo in my grove. This division of P. aurea started with just 3 culms and has since expanded to a total of 17 culms which include both shoots and whips. This division was dug this year.

Bambusa Vulgaris Wamin: This one was top-killed last winter when I tried to over-winter it being well aware that it is rated for zone10 and wanted to push my luck, but it had enough energy to come back. Aside from the skinny branch growth this spring, it put out a decent sized shoot in early June, and now it is putting up a larger one. I might try over-wintering my ventricosa which I think is rated for zone 9 the coming winter by burying the pot in the ground.

mosos: Half the mosos, not including the bigger one are starting out their 2nd shooting season this year. I'm a bit disappointed because they're coming up the same diameter as the ones in spring, but they should get way taller than spring shoots since they are not winter-damaged and it is much warmer now than early April. Heterocladas still haven't shown their 2nd shooting yet.

D Sinicus" This one has been bugging me with a rhizome neck and bud that looks like has been trying to gather energy for the last week, swelling a little at a time and is already well larger than the culm it is attached to, but never wants to shoot. I guess they can't shoot until the plant's starch levels are at 100%. It better fire before August because I want it to leaf out in time to take it in for winter.

Just found a new shoot on my Himalayacalamus hookerianus 'Teague's Blue'. Yeah!!!

And my Borinda papyrifera is still shooting. The newest shoot is noticeably bigger than the ones earlier in the season.

Shoots are still coming up, but not nearly as explosive as they were in early May. Some of them are starting to show rhizome growth, and rhizomes tend to almost always dive out of the soil making them very easy to spot. Here's some of my summer shoots.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.
