Yard pics...2011

Post by Markj »

Hello all, snapped some garden pics the other day , gone for a more general look rather than close up bamboo pics, although a couple slipped in :D

Lost quite a few plants last winter( coldest for decades  ) so have carefully avoided the gaps but other plants seem to be filling in the quite quickly .

Although mainly a bamboo garden (250+ species) I'm trying to get a good combination of companion plants to set the bamboos off. It's a tad harder than it seems at first, probably take a good few decades to get it right  but at least it's good fun trying...

I can't even blame someone else for poor choices as this is a new garden, 10 years ago is was just a flat field with no planting whatsoever.

Amazing as always.

Even the trees weren't there 10 years ago? I love the birches (?) rising up out of the "jungle".

Yep- nothing in the field bar old meadow grass, those taller silver birches went in pretty quick and then their was quite a gap whilst the house was renovated , that was probably 2 years.

Heres a old pic taken about 7 years ago, just starting to get keen again after tidying up the house

I'm also curious how you planned a garden of that size. Did you map it all out before planting, did you do sections at a time, did you just put a few key plants here and there and then built around them? I'm really interested in the process.

What Alan asked..!

I always look forward to threads where I know you've posted pictures of your bamboo. But when you show a before picture like that, I'm flat gobsmacked.

Can we get a updated long range shot? I'd loved to see that jungle from afar.

Cheers all :D

The garden/yard  is 3.5 acres, most of it planted up, the lawn is shrinking year on year and about half an acre at the mo. This place has just evolved with no set plan, would of been great to of started off with a good well set up plan, would of got some big machinery at the start and done some serious landscaping. The soil is heavy clay and with a high watertable any hole just becomes a natural pond, some big kit would of made some real nice large ponds connected by small canals . Back then it would of been pretty easy but now almost impossible without some serious damage, both to existing plants and the soil.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and it would of been great to of got that work done but back then I doubt I'd of even started the project if I'd of known how much work was involved.

Will definitely try and get some high shots done but it's not easy as everything is now so tall, in the old shot you can see two barns, take that shot today and both would be invisible, the vivax planted at the back of them is now a good 6 feet taller than the top of the barn  Plus I'd probably be in the canopy of a nigra meg'

Should get a half day at work tomorrow so will have a go.

I'm actually glad to hear that it evolved without a set plan. That was my method on the current yard. The thought of moving some day and having to start over is both exciting and disheartening, but if you can fill 3+ acres in 5 years or so, I don't feel so bad. :)

Mark, have you checked it out on Google Earth? With that size of yard and the zoom and fly over, it should show quite a bit.

Simply beautiful, I am jealous! Your yard is something that I dream of having some day...but need to take action soon as I'm approaching 40 now and would love to enjoy the fruits of my labor...
Someday maybe I'll find a bamboo my wife likes...in the meantime I'll keep planting more!
