growing bamboo from culm cuttings

Post by clearblue »

I am having good success using the instructions and photographs found at this site:

http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/forestry/Da ... amboo.html

Any comments from others who have refined this tech would be appreciated.

Clearblue,

It's good to know you are having success at culm node propagation, but what variety of bamboos are you have success with and what are your climatic conditions? I have no clue as to where you are located.

My first reply did not appear to post so here's a repeat.
Location near Eustis/Umatilla, Florida.
Bamboo I.D.:Definitely Clumping-- name Unknown. Color is a deep emeral bluish green and about 6 inches across culm --approx.60+ feet tall.

I've located 3 different patches all in local area and all are 60+feet but one patch is a deep yellow color with different type branches from the green type.

If you're ever through this area let me know and I'll show you the bamboo. My email is (clearblue55@yahoo.com)

Clearblue,

You are a little bit further north than I am, so the large bluish green has to have some cold hardiness. Perhaps it's Bambusa oldhamii. B. oldhamii is grown at Kanapaha Gardens, just east of Gainesville, Fl, and further northwest of you, but they do have some damage to B. oldhamii from cold weather on occasion.

The large deep yellow one has me totally stumped. I can't come up with any guesses on that one.

If you have a digital camera, or could borrow one, then some pictures posted in the image gallery would help with an attempted ID:

Roy--Thanks for the response and picture! The Oldhamii certainly looks like what I am growing.

I am unable to do internet pictures at this time but will attempt to take some photos of the three sites and mail you the pictures.

Clearblue,

Good deal. If I can get my scanner working then perhaps I can scan the images and upload them.

Does the large yellow culmed bamboos have any green striping on the culms?

Roy
I was able to get some pictures of all 3 sites and will mail them to you if you could send an address to me.

No-- there's no green striping on the culms and I believe I was talking about and older culm as I noticed the young sprouts are the normal green color.

Dang it Clearblue. We didn't get any guesses! I guess I will go public and guess that the 3 images in Number 1 are of Bambusa oldhamii and the 6 images in number 2 and number 3 are of Bambusa vulgaris.

The ABS Source List has B. vulgaris listed with a minimum temperature of 30 degrees F. You live about 40 to 50 miles north of Orlando, Florida and I know that you have more freezing days a year than does Tampa, Florida. B. lako is listed at 28 F, G. atro. at 25 F. I'm not sure about the accuracy on the cold hardiness when comparing these 3. But who knows..........

Nice sized B. vulgaris growing in Tampa, Florida, USA

Thanks Roy,

Please stop by if you're in this area and we'll take a closer look. I hope to have several of these three growing from culm cuttings by this time next year.
