questions regarding giant timber (oldhamii) propagation

Post by Gerryo619 »

Hello,

I have a giant timber that I would like to get some clone from. I understand that this is possible by the internode/node/internode method and I have seen youtube videos on this and it looks pretty straight forward. Questions I have are:
Is it ok to cut down one of the newer culms that haven't branched out yet and make the cuttings from there? I'd like to avoid using one that already branched out.
Also, is it ok to do this now?
Any other advice will greatly be appreciated!

No reply from me cuz I've never done Oldhamii props but I would think using a new culm will not work so well as using a 2 year old.

Thanks Needmore. Reason I asked was that I figure it'd be a lot easier to cut down and divide a newer one that hasn't branched out, although I figured the older ones would be better...

I tried B vulgaris 'Vittata' from a new culm and had no survivors but it was also my 1st culm cutting attempt.

That's a pic of my oldhamii. You can see newer ones up front vs branched-out ones. I have a potted Vittata right to the left of oldhamii

I see why you don't want to cull any old culms, nice clump! I suspect you can find an older grove somewhere and maybe cut older culms?

You have the climate I don't up here, if I could live vicariously through you the one bamboo I'd be sure grown there would be Nastus elastus.

Thanks! It's the pride and joy of my back yard. I've never heard of Nastus elastus. I saw some google images and can see the appeal. How common is that variety? Does it have a "nickname"?

Don't know about a common name, I came to know it in Hawai'i and it was rare there but is more common in Australia. Robert Saporito in FL has it for $100 plus shipping so it is pretty rare, Gib Cooper in OR also lists it and would be closer for shipping - $80 there. I wonder if Ralph Evans sort down your way has it?
