Almost all my B. Lako cuttings from last year are putting up shoots. I repotted all the B. Lako into 15 gallon containers after you left. I may put out another row of B. Lako later this year. I think I have about 12 left.

This morning it was 34?F and the frost advisery proved unnecessary. Yesterday at dawn it was 31.5?F, according to a local weather station. There was a little frost on the far edge of the porch roof and more frozen stuff on top of the cab of the truck. Had to rush out before sun up and water everything in hopes of minimizing the damage. Today, our high is supposed to reach the mid-seventies - a 40? swing.

I think I need to move to a more hospitable climate. My nerves can't take too much more of this.

I need to repot the one you gave me. I'll probably leave it in a pot this year, so I can bring it in next winter if it gets cold.

Hopefully next winter won't be nearly as bad as this one (this was the worst we've had in the 10 years I've been in Houston). I went to Caldwell's last weekend (he's only a few miles from me) and his B. lako was badly burned. If next winter is just as bad I might see a lot of damage. :x I figure I'll get damage to my: B. lako, B. vulgaris, B. v. 'Vittata', B. v. 'Wamin striata', and G. maxima/pseudoarundinacia var. minor. I shouldn't lose any, since the ground never freezes, but they'll just look sad until they put up new growth. I am staying hopeful though because even with the cold temps we had this year I didn't get any damage to my D. m. 'Amoenus', B. doli 'G.S', or B. doli. 'SS', which are all reported to have a min. temp of ~25*. So, with the others having min. temps of 27-28* I might be ok. :)

Mantis,

I may have missed it somewhere in one of your posts, but how low did the temperatures get in your area and for how long?

Here is a link to the closest weather station to my house with the data for the coldest day (Feb. 16th).
http://www.weatherunderground.com/weath ... &year=2007

It looks like we bottomed out around 25.5* for around an hour, we were under 27* for 4 hours, and under 28* for 5 hours. We were under 32* for ~9.5 hours.

I think I was probably a degree warmer because I am right on the Brazos river, whereas this weather station isn't near any water.

I really need to pick up a weather station for next winter. I know I talked about it last fall, but I ended up using my weather station funds to buy my Nikon.

It didn't get down to freezing here, but the last day of February did have a frost that killed a couple of my freshly planted fruit trees. The temp was only 38, but we did get a low frost in some areas.

That was the weirdest thing I have seen. I planted a couple of fruit trees that were pretty small, and they were killed dead.

Some of the larger leaf bamboos lost some leaves. My G. Atro lost all leaves on the lower foot and a half of the culms... everything else was just fine. It seemed to hit only pockets of areas around my farm. None of the more sensitive boo were hurt at all. The G. Atro leaves above 2 feet looked just fine... even the new growth.

Finally saw a shoot from my Indocalamus tessellatus.

I found my first elegans shoot today. With good diameter increase too!
That's not to say their weren't shoots earlier, but if so, the cold found them before I did.

Greetings to all.
The following boo's are shooting here in west central Florida (@ my home of course):
B. oldhamii - B. vulgaris vitatta - B. tuldoides - G. atter - D. yunnanicus - B. emeinsis viridiflavus - B. hirose - B. pervariabilis - B. emeinsis flavidorivens - B. malingensis - B lako - B. beechyana pubescens - G. bali-white stripe - B eutuldoides viridivitatta - B. chungii - B. chungii "Barbalatta" - B. blumeana - B. tuldoides "clone X" - D. minor amoenus - D. pseudo "Maxima" - Otatea acuminata aztecorum. Most of these plants are small plants that are less than two years in the ground. The Chungii has sent up 16 new shoots up this year! Unbelievable growth rate. The D. minor "angel mist" is also a fast culm producer. Love that plant a lot. Nothing very big in diameter though. We're in a pretty bad drought right now waiting on the June/July rainy season to begin. Good luck to everyone out there!
