Well, the extended forecast calls for lows in the upper 30's by Saturday, but that might change. I guess I should start getting ready to move some of the plants inside. :(

While we had a bad winter last year, most of the Northern Hemisphere didn't. I had read that Moscow had flowers blooming during their winter.

Anyway, I figure that we can't get much in the way of cold arctic winds if the arctic has undergone a major melt this year and the Northwest Passage has opened up for the first time on record.

Out of curiosity I visited the NOAA seasonal prediction pages to see what they were, well, predicting.

Link:

Here is their temp model for the months of Dec, Jan, Feb.

And the corresponding precipitation model.

So it looks like the majority of the country will be warmer than normal. Poor Roy is still dry.

About 20 miles inland from me they have been getting a lot of rain in the 5 plus inch category. Still mostly dry here with record or almost record temps for this time of year. It was predicted to get to 93 F today, but not sure if it has or not.

Not only have I seen "The Day After Tomorrow", I 've also seen "Absolute Zero", a movie full of bad climatology, bad acting, bad architecture, bad physics, bad archeology, bad thermodynamics and just plain bad. A movie in which the actors instinctively know which direction is North, so can tell when a compass is pointed in the wrong direction. A movie where buildings are built with doors leading out to multistory drops for no reason. A movie where doors leading out to multistory drops are left unlocked for no reason. A movie where the polarity of the Earth is reversed to make the equator frozen and the poles tropical. Oh yes, and during this change parts of the Earth have to drop in temperature to absolute zero for no good reason.

I'm just the opposite, I'm so damn sick of 90 degree days I could scream...thankfully the high temps finally drop 30 degrees this week (90-92F the past 3 days) with frost not far behind and I couldn't be happier.

When it gets above 80F I start to grouse and I may need to find a way to move to Europe.

Could you guys send some heat this way?
I have had below average temperatures for a couple of weeks with highs in the 50s and low 60s. Tomorrow the forecast is for a high of 70*F followed by a high of 55 on Wednesday. After that it looks like we will be lucky to get above 60* :(

On the bright side my plants should be dormant before the cold temps hit.

Set a record high on Wed (92*), came .5* away from a record yesterday, and so far have hit 88* today.

Last night I saw that my D. minor 'Amoenus' had put up 2 new shoots, G. maxima, B. m. 'Midori Green', B. doli. 'Green Stripe', and 'Mei-Nung' all put up new shoots that weren't there on Wed. Every single boo I have, except B. lako, has put up new shoots in the last week.

I just hope the weather stays warm long enough for them to mature a bit before we hit freezing.

All new shoots aborted. I'm sitting at 40* right now. We went from record highs last week to near record lows this week. The weather has been screwy this year. We are usually wet in the spring, dry in the summer, and wet in the fall. This year it was the exact opposite... dry spring, super wet summer, and dry fall. Should be an interesting winter.

Cold hardy is a relative term. Relative to the area you live in. B. v. "Buddha Belly" is cold hardy for Central Florida, but I think you are expecting too much of it to be cold hardy for Indiana.[/quote]

I'd agree... my Buddhas here in NC loose all leaves but return fairly quick when it warms up again.

I have 2 4+ foot Buddhas in the yard each with 4-5 culms and both with new shoots. I have 3 more simular sized in larger planters on the deck and they have not stopped shooting. They started 5-6 weeks sooner than those in the yard too. Same amounts of care given too.
Take care

My RY has been out in the yard for 2 years finaly sent up another culm thumb sized (Thanks Fred). Do they typically take so long to establish? I know whats going on below the surface is a never ending quest :) but 2 years...wow

Started 10 moso seeds and 10 B Bambos and 8 each have sprouted. soaked them in warm water over night... placed them in a sandy well draining mix. I used the clear plastic egg crates - the kind that have the flip over top to close. Nice little single enclosures. Open them for a few hours a day... mist them with warm water... little over a week later I saw them begin poking out their noses. :)

Brad & All
I'm also looking forward to cold weather. It's a time when I can actually enjoy my place, and put up the lawnmower and tractor for a while. we've had 3" of rain in 5 days and everything has greened up. Looks almost like spring!.

Finally broke down and got a cold frame this year so some of my marginals will be much happier.

Its been in the 40's at night here, and first frost is close, but really very pleasant weather as a whole.
