Cold tolerance of bamboo mites ?
Anyone have any idea how cold it has to be and for how long to kill bamboo mites. It will be down to -13 C (8.6F) with the windchill here on Vancouver Island. Would be so gread to have them all die.

Booboy.......
Try this:
In a blender filled with 1/2 full of WATER
put TWO GARLIC BULBS, and 1 tablespoon of ground CAYENNE pepper - blend 4-5 minutes then STRAIN into a gallon jug - fill up the jug with clear water.
Put 1/4 cup of the mixture into a 2 gallon garden sprayer....
and 'voila' this stuff kills all bad bugs or at least slows them down for a while but doesn't POISON anything.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

Bill,
I don't know how well that recipe works on bamboo mites, but it sure as heck would keep me away from your bamboo. Then again, if there were nice, juicy sweet shoots coming up, garlic and cayenne may be just the right seasoning...Gently steamed. Maybe a squeeze of lime... hmm.

Has anyone EVER reported mites being damaged by cold temperatures?

Sorry
I never had them little buggers (mites). I think my neighbors chickens gobbles them all up. In the last 2 weeks I've seen the local bobcat get 3 of his chickens....HA-HA ... I hate those chickens. They wake me up before dawn. So I have an anger issue. But they do eat a good amount of the bugs around here so I'm not that mad.

RE: Cold tolerance of bamboo mites ?
I have been told by people with mite infested bamboo that the cold temps that I have will kill them but no one that I talked to had any proof of that.
I did talk to someone from the northeast that has a different bamboo mite that overwinters in the leaf litter below the bamboo then infests the bamboo in the spring.

RE: Cold tolerance of bamboo mites ?
I've had some kind of mite affecting my container bamboos that come indoors for winter. Leaving them outside in subfreezing weather for a day seems to help keep them under control.
It's all anecdotal, though. Maybe someone should set up a research, collecting bamboo mites and doing cold-tolerance tests. Anyone up for putting mites in their freezer?
