buying liners of bambusoides, moso or other phyllostachys

I am doing some initial research on viability of bamboo plantations and their adaptability to the southeast US, zone 8 and also zone 7. What I am looking for are sources for liners, particularly the larger Phyllostachys. I am thinking bambusoides, edulis, nigra "Henon", possibly makinoi. Are there liner producers in the US for these plants?

How bamboo is propagated doesn't lend well to liners. They do liners with tissue-culture because of their tiny size, but divisions is the common method. So does anyone tissue-culture them? You probably could grow moso from seed, since its widely available.

Lance, thanks for clarifying that for me.

I guess then I need to know who I can get seed from or if possible rhizome divisions in large quantities. Seed would be ideal due to $$, but my luck with bamboo seed is poor at best. I bought Moso seeds a couple of years back and didn't get any to germinate. The seeds most likely were old. I guess I shouldn't have bought them off of eBay in the first place, you live you learn.

Call me crazy, but I am just curious if there are any suppliers preferably in the SE US that can supply 500 or more plants of a given species at one time. Just throwing the thought out there.

Don't worry, I'm crazy, too. I want 50 acres of bamboo. bamboo costs so much, which is a problem.

Lewis bamboo might be able to accomodate such needs if given ample time. But as said, it'll cost you.

I think Boo shoot gardens in WA sells liners. Their minimum order is quite large though. I buy most of my bamboo from them for resale.

Let me guess. Yes, they are from tissue culture.

Yes I believe they are TC. Actually its not that bad 30 flat minimum at $4.50 per flat.

Great price, but how many plants are in a flat?

Jackie at Boo Shoots won't sell to you unless you have a nursery license and have a business as a reseller. I believe although I haven't spoken to her, is that the TC plants are still only Fargesia.

Can you mix the flats? Also is there a cost difference for scabrida?

They don't sell plants directly like Boo Shoots. The rules are basically the same for all wholesalers or growers with regards to who they sell plants to.

Just depends. Alot of wholesalers don't care who they sell to just as long as minimum order is achieved.
