Post by philinshelton »

after cold, sunny weather colored the culms, I peeled the sheaths off and took this pic from the south side of the plant.

Phil-
It's looking gorgeous. When I saw it during my visit a couple of months ago, I thought it was the best looking Chusqua I've ever seen. One of these days mine is going to look like that...

Phil
That plant looks great. It almost makes me want to try and not kill one. Unfortunately my record is dead Chusqua : 2 , Living : 0

I was in your area last week but I was with a group of people that were not into bamboo so I limited bamboo nursery visits to two.

I see my friend Adam already posted a pic of the plant. He was the one that convinced me to peel of the sheaths after he saw the plant - thanks Adam! Bill, I will be seeing you at the ABS booth at the fair...we will be manning the booth Saturday morning.

I've seen dark purple and pinkish, but never blood red. That is amazing!
Phil- Do you think that coloring trait is unique to C.culeo species, or unique within C.culeo species?
I'm wondering if any of mine will do that if they are planted in the right spot.
Awesome plant!

green99, I haven't seen coloring quite like this before, in fact, not even on this very plant. I am sure it is temporary, and caused by the exposure of the culm to the winter sun, and perhaps the cold, dry winds played a part. Viewing from all point except due due south, the color is unremarkable.

Phil, I had some new yellow groove culms turn such a dark burgundy last spring that they were basically black. They were growing right next to my Nigra and it sure confused folks when I said, "No, the black ones are yellow groove and the green ones are the black bamboo...I remember checking them out a few weeks back and there was still some of the coloration, I'll look when I get back home and post a pic if they still have the color. Maybe yours will hang on to it for awhile - beautiful!

Talking about the colour, there's a big spring plant fair near to here, and a local bamboo nursery imported a stack of stuff from Holland to try and sell. One of the plants was Ph. aureosulcata 'aureocaulis' that was greenhouse grown and just finished shooting, every culm was bright red- looked so different from normal garden grown stock! Needless to say they sold every one of the "new red bamboo"
Bamboo...Please note... This plant is seriously addictive and you may lose interest in other, less rewarding plants!

Still a nice looking plant from the north side. I think you maybe right about winds cold winds having an effect. I've seen plants with more wind turn more color, but it's hard to really prove.
