In my experience with propagating this B. textilis,
http://tinyurl.com/zxhho ,
take the culm and visually divide it into 3 equal parts. The bottom one third is from the top of the rhizome to the first branch. Then take the other two thirds (-->>), the part with the branches, and take the middle third of it to select your branched nodes for propagating material. That's the area were I find that I have the most success with culm node propagation. I didn't say that my success ratio was high on this species, but the success I've had seems to come from this area.

Rob, I saw some textilis last weekend that was started by culm cuttings,I was surprised as this is a thin walled species and most reports are its not a good candidate for culm cutting propigation,Oldhamii is a very good candidate and should grow pretty good where you live especialy if you can shelter it at all in its first year/s ,,,just do as roy sugested,,,good luck
Kaylen. zone 8 borderline b.near Boerne Texas
