Moso seedling with yellow leaves and green stripes.

Post by David »

This is a 5 year old moso seedling that has yellow leaves, and green stripes. It has had this interesting coloration for 3 years. Over time the yellow turns green, and the stripes darker green. It did not fair well in the ground and I placed it in a 30 gal bucket last spring. It has been well watered, and has had a timed released fertilizer with micros applied. Some of the solid green leaves have thin white/yellow stripes running their length. It shoots very early in March, and the first shoots are always frozen. It was doing well this year with several 2-3 ft culms until I forgot to bring it in one night, and they were frozen. This the 2nd flush of culms which are considerably smaller than the first. The leaves do not look like my other moso plants. Is this how seedlings are suppose to look?

My seedlings look like that too. Supposedly the bigger leaves are a juvenile trait but mine haven't outgrown it in a couple years' time. I'm beginning to wonder if they're from a more tropical region. I dunno. I planted one outside last spring and it did great but after winter I have yet to see any life from it.

This is the second spring for a 2-year (or 3-year, I forget) old Moso seedling I obtained from Roger Lewis, so it is now 4 or 5 years out of the seed. It is not getting any taller or larger diameter but is running far & wide and is producing lots of culms. It still have the large juvenille leaves, and they are white striped for the first few weeks after they emerge and then fade to green. Some are nearly all white at first.

I'm amazed how many 'Moso' seedlings show varigation in the leaf, it always die's out in time . However varigation in the culm is another matter, and is always worth looking out for.
Bamboo...Please note... This plant is seriously addictive and you may lose interest in other, less rewarding plants!

Here are some of the white leaves on the Moso seedling culms - they'll fade to green in a few weeks.

I do have to say that one of my moso seedlings, now 2 years old, has a varied amount of black on the culm, like nigra bory. I told Roger about it last year, but we were both skeptical since it was so young. I am still very skeptical but as it keeps putting up new culms with more black, I'm getting more and more excited. I plan on putting it in the ground this year so we'll see what happens then. I'll see if I can get a good picture of some of the culms.
