This should be interesting to Brad as he maybe the only Shanghai 3 grower in the US . After a start this year that saw both Markj and I wondering why we were growing Shanghai 3 now the Boo has shown it's true colours and we are happy once more
I'm at 21 new shoots and counting , I bought a single five foot shoot in Aug 2004 , this culm produced three nice big culms last spring and now is going mad . Some good news is besides the fat new shoots are also three whipshoots perfect for propagation. So Shanghai 3 grows amazingly fast and it easy to propagate.

Was shanghai 3 a weak-walled species. I remember talk about some shanghai that was vivax-like in regards to culm strength.

It is a thin walled Boo, but does it suffer the damage of Vivax ? that I don't know . I'll try and find out on the Jos trip.

Steve, nice shoots, they look just a tad behind the size of my 3 year old Dulcis this year so I bet next year they'll knock your socks off! I'm not even sure if indeed I have an S3, I have not inquired about my quarantine plants in a few months now but hopefully the S3 is still going.

Brad if it shot it still should be alive or there would be some important questions to ask as you know a new shoot proves the plant and you really need to mess up to kill it at that point. As your plants are with a good Bamboo man I'm sure there safe. Best of luck with them all. We are still planning on the D.C. move next year , so put me down for a S3 shoot in two years time please

This Dulcis will have to do until the S3 arrives and takes off. This is a 3 year old that has experienced winters of -19F, -12F, +3F the 3 winters it has been here and still has the vigor to run and size up.
