Japonica culms turning burgundy
Howdy folks.
My Japonica culms are turning burgundy (late Oct). I live in Central PA in zone 6b/7a.
The plant is also putting up a couple shoots.
Is this normal?

Mine are doing the same thing. I must admit I don't recall them shooting in the Fall before.

Re: Japonica culms turning burgundy
I must admit I didn't look at the culms, but noticed the new shoots as I walked by. I do recall culms on other types of bamboo turning burgundy with time, such as Arundinarea gigantea, so if it is happening to my japonica I would not be worried about it. (I was more concerned by the fact that the recent winds have blown over a tree, a trellis and anti-deer defences.)jpluddite wrote:Are your culms turning burgundy, too?

Re: Japonica culms turning burgundy
My japonica is shooting now as well. It seems that I always have some bamboos that get the burgandy look in fall but haven't noticed it on the japonica.
God Bless,

Rufledt,
I wouldn't have guessed that japonica would survive in Massachusetts? Do you do something special with them?

Im in quincy which is right on the coast south of Boston. I think it's borderline zone 6/7 so I bet it could survive well enough. Mine, however, is in a pot in my nice warm apartment near a large window.

A few people are growing Psuedosasa japonica here on the coast.

Re: Japonica culms turning burgundy
I have not noticed any fall shooting on my Japonicas. There is a thread about P A spectabilis with burgundy shoots from last spring. I think the consensus was that it had to do with cooler weather.

Re: Japonica culms turning burgundy
We used to be Zone 5b/6a and have had Ps. japonica in the ground for many years. No I think we are closer to 6a/6b.
