Now if I could only get my other bamboo to do this...
I messed up on my watering and lost a bunch of foliage and 3 large culms on my Q. tumidissinoda last month. Feeling bad, I've since made sure it's gotten watered every day. About 2 weeks ago it started shooting, and all of a sudden it's gone crazy. Here's a portion of the clump. I quit counting after I got to 60 new culms:

Looks like you could get a lot of nice divisions from that next spring.

Looking look , is the Bamboo contained ? I have a tumidissinoda here in a pot , it's from Markj . I'd love to grow it in the ground but don't really have the room for it to go mad. What's the culm diameter at the moment ?

It's contained...but only for another week! I've had this in a 2' diameter pot for a year, while slowly doing my landscaping and dirt-moving. I'm going to plant it in a big mound at the end of the week and then get out of its way. As for size, the mature culm in the middle of the picture has a node diameter a little more than an inch, and so far all the new ones are smaller than that, but they're making up for it in numbers.

Thanks for that , I have a spot that it could go or I could construct a cement contained ares for it, it's too nice a Bamboo to just pot grow and I really want the walking stick size culms one of these days.
I hope it does great things for you in the new area.

Steve-
I've found this can be a delicate bamboo that seems to do best and have the best leaf color in medium shady conditions. Where do you have yours sited?

At the moment it's in full sun , here it seems to suffer more from wind than anything else, but because it's growing in a pot it may not be showing it's true colours as well as it could.Does yours suffer from the wind ?
Markj has a large grove as his place, if I remember it is also mostly in full sun. I hope to visit mark soon and See how his Boos are sizing up . Mark did say tumidissinoda is a little hard to propagate as a lot of the whipshoots and running rhizomes take a long time to make a good root system , the bulk of the root system seems to be back toward the center of the grove. I've not tried propagating it here yet. Mine is a smallish plant from a whipshoot , I'll try and post a pic tomorrow. Mine has made a good number of new culms this year but they are small diameter. I have a very hotspot I could plant it with some wind shelter, I must ask Mark about the climate in China it comes from and if it will do better with heat. We are generally cooler than your zone 8 so planting it in a hot spot here would take the temps up into 80's to 90 's. If it likes more shade I've been thinking about planting it behind the house where it would only get Sun from noon on.

I think that Mark's tumidissinoda is the most beautiful bamboo I've seen.

Steve-
What was the foliage color like in Mark's grove sitting in the sun? When mine is in shade it seems to be a darker green, and when it's in sun it lightens up (I've experimented by moving the pot around), but maybe it was just a result of moves coinciding with seasonal changes. Phil in Shelton has a very nice and impressive grove on the side of his house where (if I remember correctly) it gets shade.

Marks's blades were a good green as far as I can remember , he is very busy at the moment but perhaps he could do us a pic soon.
There is a bad pic of my tumidissinoda in the thread I posted here.

p.s. Shanghai 3 update pic thread , Shanghai 3 has been in the ground for less than two years and was originally a single five foot culm.
